The Federal Fire Service has disclosed that property estimated at ₦680 million was saved during a fire outbreak at the Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, Kano State.

The Kano State Controller of the Federal Fire Service, Sadiq Usman-Mahmud, disclosed this in a statement signed by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Al-Hassan Kantin, on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the service received a distress call from the university’s security personnel at approximately 11:38 a.m. and immediately deployed firefighters from its Federal Secretariat station.

The fire affected an area measuring approximately 100 by 100 square metres within the university’s Architecture Department, where files and other materials were reportedly kept.

Usman-Mahmud said personnel of the Federal Fire Service and Kano State Fire Service jointly extinguished the fire using two medium water jets, preventing it from spreading to other sections of the building and nearby properties.

The preliminary assessment attributed the outbreak to damaged electrical wiring.

The controller said property estimated at ₦700 million was exposed to the fire, out of which assets worth approximately ₦680 million were saved.

Property estimated at ₦20 million was, however, destroyed during the incident.

“No casualty was recorded, and firefighters conducted a thorough inspection to ensure there was no further risk of fire,” the statement said.

The Fire Service advised universities, other institutions and members of the public to conduct regular inspections and maintenance of their electrical installations.

It also urged property owners to replace damaged or faulty wiring promptly to reduce the risk of preventable fire outbreaks.
