Los Angeles County prosecutors have announced that they will not seek the death penalty against Nick Reiner, who is accused of killing his parents, Hollywood filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer-producer Michele Singer Reiner.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced the decision on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, shortly before Nick appeared for a pretrial hearing.
Hochman said his office conducted a thorough review of the case and considered factors supporting and opposing capital punishment before reaching its decision.
He added that prosecutors consulted the surviving members of the Reiner family, whose wishes played an important role in the determination.
The decision means that Nick could be sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole if convicted.
Nick was indicted on two counts of murder, with special-circumstance allegations of multiple murders and killing by lying in wait. He is also accused of personally using a dangerous weapon—a knife—in the alleged offences.
The special-circumstance allegations made him eligible for either the death penalty or life imprisonment without parole under California law.
Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, were found stabbed to death at their Brentwood home in Los Angeles on December 14, 2025.
Prosecutors alleged that Nick fled the residence following the incident. He was arrested later that day in Exposition Park.
A Los Angeles County grand jury returned an indictment against him on July 20, 2026. The indictment was subsequently unsealed in August.
Nick pleaded not guilty to the two murder charges and the accompanying special-circumstance allegations. He is being held without bail while awaiting trial.
Rob was a prominent actor and filmmaker known for directing acclaimed productions, including When Harry Met Sally, Stand by Me, The Princess Bride and This Is Spinal Tap.
The charges against Nick remain allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless proved guilty before the court.
