Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has challenged United States authorities to release any Federal Bureau of Investigation records linked to him, declaring that he has nothing to hide.

Obi issued the challenge while responding to an allegation by former presidential aide Reno Omokri that leading contenders in Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, including Obi and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, have records with the FBI.
The former Anambra State governor said he was unaware of any FBI file concerning him and had never had dealings with the American law-enforcement agency.
He, however, maintained that any purported records should be made public rather than become the subject of political speculation.
“I am not aware that I have any FBI records. I have never had anything to do with the FBI. If there are records, let them release them. I have nothing to hide,” Obi said.
His response followed Omokri’s assertion that the existence of an FBI record should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of criminal conduct.
Omokri had made the claim while defending President Bola Tinubu amid renewed public controversy over efforts to obtain records held by United States law-enforcement agencies concerning the President.
According to Omokri, all the major presidential candidates have records associated with their names in FBI files, including Atiku and Obi. He argued that an FBI record could arise from several circumstances and was not necessarily a criminal record.
“All the major presidential candidates have FBI records, including Atiku and Peter Obi, and those records are not necessarily criminal,” Omokri said.
He consequently challenged Obi and other opposition figures demanding the disclosure of records relating to Tinubu to authorise the release of their own files.
Obi’s response appears to accept the transparency challenge, although he denied knowing of any record held by the FBI concerning him.
The controversy followed reports that Tinubu had approached a United States court over the proposed disclosure of additional records held by the FBI and Drug Enforcement Administration.
Obi had previously criticised attempts to prevent the release of the records, arguing that public officeholders must be prepared to provide clear and verifiable explanations whenever legitimate questions arise about their past.
He maintained that accountability and transparency were essential attributes of leadership and that persons seeking to govern Nigeria should not resist legitimate public scrutiny.
