Senator Shehu Buba Umar, representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, has voluntarily presented himself to security agencies for investigation over allegations linking him to banditry, terrorism financing and kidnapping, while insisting that the claims against him are false and politically motivated.

Buba disclosed this on Monday while addressing journalists, political leaders and constituents in Bauchi, challenging those behind the allegations to submit credible evidence to the appropriate security agencies rather than circulate what he described as edited videos and unverified claims on social media.

According to a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Sabo Mohammed, the senator, through his legal team led by former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Chief Yakubu Maikyau, SAN, has made himself available to the State Security Service (SSS), the Nigeria Police Force and the Defence Intelligence Agency for what he described as a comprehensive investigation.

“According to the senator, he has, through his legal team led by former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Chief Yakubu Maikyau, SAN, made himself available to the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Police Force and the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) for a comprehensive investigation into the allegations,” Mohammed said.

The senator maintained that he had never sponsored, financed, armed, facilitated or supported bandits, terrorists, kidnappers or any criminal organisation.

He described the accusations as part of a long-running campaign of character assassination which, according to him, dates back to 2014 and has intensified following his declaration to contest the 2027 Bauchi State governorship election on the platform of the Peoples Redemption Party.

“He maintained that he has never sponsored, financed, armed, facilitated or supported bandits, terrorists, kidnappers or any criminal organisation, describing the allegations as politically motivated attempts to damage his reputation and undermine his political career,” the statement said.

Buba also addressed allegations arising from his former position as Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, saying some of the official engagements he undertook in that capacity had been misrepresented as evidence linking him to criminal groups.

He challenged anyone possessing evidence of wrongdoing against him to submit it to the SSS, police, DIA or the courts, rather than rely on social media publications.

The senator further disclosed that his legal team had commenced defamation proceedings before the Federal High Court in Abuja in connection with some of the allegations.

He said a petition had also been submitted to INTERPOL concerning one of his accusers, whom he said was operating from Niger Republic.

Buba, however, appealed to his supporters to remain calm and refrain from violence, retaliation or online harassment against those making accusations against him.

He said he welcomed a “transparent, thorough and impartial” investigation by the security agencies, expressing confidence that such an inquiry would establish the facts.

The Bauchi South senator has faced allegations linking him to suspected bandits since 2024, allegations he has repeatedly denied.

The SSS had reportedly stated on September 5 that its investigation into the allegations would be made public at the appropriate time.

Buba subsequently renewed his challenge to his accusers to provide credible evidence to security agencies or the courts.

No finding of criminal wrongdoing against the senator has been established in the material provided, while the security agencies have yet to publicly disclose the outcome of any investigation into the allegations.
