Niger Republic’s military leader, General Abdourahamane Tiani, has appointed Brigadier General Mamane Sani Kiaou as the new Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, weeks after an attempted army mutiny shook the military government.

State television announced on Friday that the appointment was contained in a decree signed by Tiani on September 11, 2026.

“By a decree signed on September 11, 2026, General Abdourahamane Tiani has appointed Brigadier General Mamane Sani Kiaou as chief of staff of the armed forces,” the state broadcaster reported.

Kiaou, who previously served as Army Chief of Staff, replaces General Moussa Salaou Barmou. No official reason was given for Barmou’s removal.

The reshuffle follows last month’s failed uprising by disgruntled soldiers, during which several sensitive locations in Niamey were reportedly attacked and mutineers occupied a strategic military base at the capital’s airport.

The attempted revolt was eventually suppressed by forces loyal to the military government, reportedly with support from Russian personnel, after intense fighting in the capital.

Tiani also appointed General Abdourahmane Abou Zataka to replace Kiaou as Army Chief of Staff, completing a major shake-up of the country’s military command structure.

Kiaou has been described by associates as a seasoned field commander with experience in operations against jihadist groups in Niger’s western Tillaberi region and the southeastern Diffa area.

State media reported that he recently toured key military garrisons across the country in an effort aimed at restoring cohesion among troops following the unrest.

Kiaou was also involved in negotiations that culminated in the withdrawal of French and United States forces from Niger after the July 2023 military coup.

Niger has been under military rule since Tiani led the coup that ousted elected President Mohamed Bazoum in July 2023. Bazoum has remained in detention since his removal.

Since taking power, Tiani’s government has strengthened relations with Russia while significantly reducing military and diplomatic ties with Western countries, particularly France.

Nigerien state television had earlier accused France of involvement in last month’s uprising, although the allegation was not independently established in the material provided.
