The Federal Character Commission Commissioner representing Enugu State, Peter Eze, has urged young people in the state not to be discouraged from applying for Federal Government jobs by the belief that such opportunities are reserved for applicants with political connections.

Eze spoke on Thursday at the Peter Eze Youth Connect workshop held at the International Conference Centre, Enugu, with the theme, “Beyond Quotas: Unlocking Opportunities for Enugu Youths Through the Federal Character Commission.”
He said the widespread assumption that federal jobs had already been allocated before being publicly advertised had discouraged many qualified young people from submitting applications.
“One of the major reasons for this unfortunate situation is the existence of generational fallacies, erroneous impressions and misleading assumptions that advertised or publicised Federal Public Service and other public service jobs have already been shared or given out even before they are publicly advertised,” he said.
Eze urged the youths not to disqualify themselves because of fear or unverified claims that recruitment exercises had been predetermined, stressing that they must first apply before they can be considered.
“No player has ever won a football match outside the pitch. Let me, therefore, use this opportunity to emphasise that you can barely get an opportunity you do not apply for,” he said.
According to him, the Federal Character Commission has a constitutional responsibility to promote equitable representation in federal institutions, while more than 700 federal ministries, departments, agencies, commissions and other establishments provide employment and related opportunities.
“You do not need to buy a job; you need to prepare yourself,” Eze said, warning the participants against middlemen and individuals demanding money in exchange for purported government employment.
He explained that the workshop was organised to expose Enugu youths to legitimate employment opportunities, grants, scholarships, fellowships and training programmes.
The commissioner disclosed that five participants would be selected for full scholarships to study abroad, adding that the initiative would be sustained beyond the workshop through a network for sharing information about legitimate opportunities.
“Let nobody make you believe that you need a godfather before you can succeed. Get the information. Follow the process. Prepare yourself. Apply. Compete. And pursue your opportunity,” he said.
