The Nigeria Football Federation has appointed former Super Eagles head coach Augustine Eguavoen as interim head coach of the Super Falcons, handing him responsibility for Nigeria’s opening matches in the race for the 2028 Olympic Games.

The NFF confirmed that Eguavoen will lead the senior women’s national team for the two-legged second-round Olympic qualifying tie against Comoros in October, while the federation continues its search for a substantive head coach.

The appointment comes weeks after the departure of Justine Madugu and his technical crew following Nigeria’s disappointing 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign and failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Eguavoen, popularly known as “Cerezo,” brings extensive senior international coaching experience to the assignment. He previously handled the Super Eagles and led Nigeria to a bronze-medal finish at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

His latest appointment, however, takes him into the women’s national-team set-up as the Super Falcons attempt to secure one of Africa’s two places at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Eguavoen will be assisted by Nasarawa Amazons head coach Christopher Danjuma, who has extensive experience in Nigeria’s women’s football system and previously handled the Falconets.

Former Super Falcons defender Ayisat Yusuf will also serve on the technical crew, while former Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer Olatunji Baruwa has been appointed goalkeeper trainer.

The immediate task before the new interim technical crew is the second-round qualifying double-header against Comoros.

Both matches will be played at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo, with the first leg scheduled for October 9 and the return fixture on October 13, 2026.

Nigeria received a bye into the second round as one of the three highest-ranked teams in the qualifying competition, while Comoros advanced after defeating Sudan 30-0 on aggregate.

The Super Falcons face a lengthy route to Los Angeles, as they must negotiate four rounds of two-legged knockout fixtures to claim one of the continent’s two Olympic tickets.

Should Nigeria overcome Comoros, Eguavoen’s side will advance to the third round, scheduled for February 23 to March 6, 2027, where they will face either the Democratic Republic of Congo or Morocco.

Qualification from that stage would set up a fourth-round tie against one of Tunisia, Senegal, Benin Republic or Mali between October 4 and 12, 2027, before the final qualifying round scheduled for November 23 to December 4, 2027.

The appointment therefore places Eguavoen in charge at a crucial rebuilding period for the Super Falcons, with the immediate priority of keeping Nigeria’s Olympic qualification hopes alive while the NFF searches for a permanent successor to Madugu.
