Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has revealed that his political relationship with Peter Obi began to unravel after the former Anambra State governor ignored his advice against joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general election.

Baba-Ahmed, who was Obi’s running mate in the 2023 presidential election, said he personally warned Obi that moving to the ADC would take him outside what he considered a more suitable political environment, but his advice was not heeded.
Speaking on the MIC ON Podcast, Baba-Ahmed recalled that he went to the Yar’Adua Centre ahead of Obi and pulled him aside to express his concerns about the proposed political move.
“When he was going to join ADC, I had to go to Yar’Adua Centre ahead of him. I called him aside. They were worried. Why is Datti calling Peter Obi aside and talking to him?” he said.
According to Baba-Ahmed, he made it clear during the conversation that he did not consider the ADC the right political platform for Obi.
“And I told him, ‘This is the last time I’m coming to this place.’ I gave him my reasons. This is not a place for you. Was I wrong? I was proven right,” he said.
Baba-Ahmed maintained that subsequent developments vindicated his position, pointing to Obi’s eventual departure from the ADC.
“Within four months, Peter Obi left ADC,” he said.
Explaining how the episode affected their political collaboration, Baba-Ahmed said Obi’s decision to proceed despite his warning marked a turning point in their relationship.
“Peter Obi moved out of his comfort zone against my advice. Beyond that point, I could no longer help him,” he said.
He also expressed discomfort with what he described as contradictions in some of Obi’s political positions, while declining to dwell extensively on the politics of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.
“Now, I don’t like people who contradict themselves, and I don’t want to go into criticising again the politics of Atiku because that’s not what I’m about,” Baba-Ahmed said.
His remarks shed further light on the political distance that developed between two men who jointly contested Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party.
Obi and Baba-Ahmed ran on the Labour Party ticket in that election, finishing third behind Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Baba-Ahmed’s latest comments suggest that disagreements over Obi’s political realignment ahead of 2027 played a significant role in the weakening of their once-close political partnership.
