A Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Yola, Adamawa State, has ordered the remand of a 27-year-old man, Muktar Shehu, over the alleged theft of 22 pieces of women’s pants which he reportedly said were taken for ritual purposes.

Shehu, a resident of Zango Ward in Jimeta, Yola-North Local Government Area, was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Court 3, presided over by Uwani Danladi, following his arrest by the police.

He was charged with alleged house trespass, theft and criminal damage.

According to the First Information Report presented to the court by the prosecutor, Inspector Danjuma Hamidu, the defendant allegedly broke into the residence of a woman identified as Halima Yakubu on August 6, 2026.

The prosecution alleged that Shehu stole 22 pieces of women’s pants from the residence alongside other clothing items.

Hamidu further told the court that during police interrogation, the defendant allegedly disclosed that he took the clothing items for ritual purposes.

When the allegations were read to him in court, Shehu pleaded guilty to the charges.

Despite the guilty plea, the prosecutor applied to call a witness to corroborate the defendant’s admission before the court proceeded further with the case.

The court subsequently ordered that Shehu be remanded in a correctional facility in Yola pending further proceedings.

The case centres on allegations that the defendant unlawfully entered the complainant’s residence, damaged property and removed the clothing items, including the 22 women’s pants, which the prosecution said he later claimed were intended for ritual use.

The remand order means Shehu will remain in custody while the prosecution presents further evidence in support of the charges.
