British academic Jason Arday, who recently resigned as Professor of Sociology of Education at the University of Cambridge amid allegations of plagiarism and controversy over aspects of his academic and professional record, has been found dead at the age of 41.

Arday was found unresponsive at an address in Battersea, south London, on Friday, August 14, 2026, just days after his resignation from Cambridge became public.
The Metropolitan Police said officers were called by the London Ambulance Service shortly after 3 p.m. following a report that a man had been found unresponsive inside a property.
Arday was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said his next of kin had been informed and were receiving support from officers.
The Metropolitan Police described the death as unexpected but said it was not believed to be suspicious.
A file is expected to be prepared for the coroner as authorities continue the formal process surrounding his death.
Reacting to the development, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, Professor Deborah Prentice, expressed profound sadness over Arday’s death.
“We are desperately saddened to hear this tragic news. Our heartfelt sympathies go to Jason Arday’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time,” Prentice said.
Arday’s death comes barely days after TheNigeriaLawyer reported his resignation from the University of Cambridge and Jesus College following weeks of controversy surrounding allegations of plagiarism and questions raised over aspects of his qualifications, career history and personal achievements.
He resigned with immediate effect on August 5, 2026, from his position as Professor of Sociology of Education at Cambridge and his fellowship at Jesus College.
In his resignation statement, Arday said accepting the Cambridge professorship had been the greatest professional privilege of his life but that the intense public scrutiny surrounding him had become personally damaging.
He said the “relentless accusations, speculation and public commentary” had taken a profound toll on him and those he loved.
Arday insisted at the time that his decision to step down should not be regarded as an admission of the allegations levelled against him.
He had previously rejected suggestions that he was a liar, fantasist or academic fraud and maintained that mistakes and discrepancies identified in aspects of his record should not be interpreted as evidence of deliberate deception.
Arday became a prominent figure in British academia in 2023 when, at the age of 37, he was appointed Professor of Sociology of Education at Cambridge, making him the youngest Black person at the time to attain a professorship at the university.
His rise attracted significant attention because of his account of overcoming developmental and educational challenges before establishing a career in academia.
The controversy surrounding him intensified in 2026 after allegations emerged concerning passages in his doctoral thesis and other academic work.
Questions were also raised about some statements concerning his professional history, charitable fundraising activities and personal achievements.
Cambridge subsequently announced investigations concerning the circumstances surrounding his appointment and tenure, while Arday consistently denied intentionally misleading the university or committing deliberate academic fraud.
His resignation came amid continuing scrutiny, with Cambridge saying its examination of issues surrounding his appointment would continue despite his departure.
In his final public comments surrounding the resignation, Arday said he needed time away from the controversy to recover and rediscover himself.
His death, coming little more than a week after he stepped down, has prompted expressions of shock and condolences from the academic community and public figures.
No official cause of death has been announced.
Police have expressly said the death is currently being treated as unexpected but not suspicious, with the matter to be referred to the coroner.
