A Mapo Grade ‘A’ Customary Court sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, has convicted a 50-year-old woman, Bolanle Adeyemo, for possessing and presenting a forged marriage certificate in an attempt to resist the dissolution of her marriage.

The President of the court, Mrs S.M. Akintayo, on Friday sentenced Adeyemo to one year in a correctional centre on each of the counts relating to unlawful possession and forgery of the marriage certificate, with an option of one month of community service.
The court, however, discharged her on the first count of conspiracy.
The criminal proceedings arose from a divorce petition filed on March 26 by her husband, 55-year-old Adeboye Adeyemo, following disagreements in their marriage.
In opposing the dissolution of the marriage, Bolanle maintained that she had a valid marriage with Adeyemo and tendered a marriage certificate before the court in support of her position.
Her husband challenged the authenticity and admissibility of the document, insisting that no marriage certificate was issued to them on September 12, 1996, as represented in the document.
Following the dispute over the certificate, the court directed the police to investigate its authenticity.
Prosecuting counsel, Inspector Ayodele Ayeni, subsequently informed the court that investigations showed that the Ibadan North Local Government registry, whose name appeared on the certificate, denied issuing any marriage certificate to Bolanle.
The prosecution maintained that the certificate tendered before the court was therefore forged.
Ayeni told the court that Bolanle presented the document as evidence in the divorce proceedings instituted against her by her husband.
According to the prosecution, the offences contravened Sections 516, 465 and 430 of the Criminal Code, Cap 38, Volume II, Laws of Oyo State 2000.
Bolanle subsequently pleaded guilty to the forgery allegation.
Delivering judgment, Akintayo held that the conviction was based on the defendant’s guilty plea and the evidence presented by the prosecution.
The court said it exercised its discretion in sentencing her after taking her guilty plea into consideration.
Akintayo consequently sentenced her on the second and third counts involving unlawful possession and forgery of the marriage certificate, while discharging her on the conspiracy count.
