The Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to investigate an alleged threat to his life and circumstances surrounding an incident involving the Executive Chairman of Odo Otin Local Government Area, Adewale Adeyinka, in Okuku.

Egbedun made the call in a statement released on Wednesday, in which he gave an account of what he said he personally witnessed after receiving a distress call from Adeyinka.
According to the Speaker, he was returning from the Osun State House of Assembly after a World Press Conference when the council chairman contacted him and said he was being pursued by a three-vehicle convoy.
“He informed me that he was being pursued by a three-vehicle convoy,” Egbedun said.
He said he immediately advised Adeyinka to return to the Okuku Divisional Police Station, which he considered the safest place for him to seek protection.
“I thereafter proceeded towards Okuku with my convoy and security personnel. By the time we arrived, the Chairman had gained entry into the police station,” the Speaker said.
Egbedun said he was unaware of what had happened outside the police station before his arrival but was subsequently informed that members of the public had apprehended two men and that a firearm had allegedly been recovered from them.
Concerned that the situation could degenerate into mob action, the Speaker said he directed his Chief Detail to remove the two men from the crowd and place them in official custody.
“Concerned that the situation could degenerate into mob action, I immediately instructed my Chief Detail to take the two men away from the crowd and place them in official custody,” he said.
He added that he later directed that the suspects be taken to Osogbo and handed over to the State Security Service alongside the firearm reportedly recovered from them.
“The suspects have since been handed over to the appropriate security authorities. It is now the responsibility of the relevant agencies to establish the facts surrounding the incident,” Egbedun said.
The Speaker consequently called for what he described as a thorough, impartial and professional investigation into the incident.
According to him, the investigation should determine the identities of the two men, the circumstances surrounding the firearm and ammunition reportedly recovered from them, the ownership and purpose of the vehicles allegedly involved in the pursuit, and the events that led to the confrontation.
Egbedun also rejected what he described as false and misleading narratives being circulated on social media by some supporters of the All Progressives Congress in Odo Otin.
“I will not be drawn into the false narratives and deliberate misinformation being circulated by desperate political actors seeking to distort what actually transpired,” he said.
He further linked the incident to an earlier viral video which he alleged contained threats against him and other members of his political party.
“This incident once again reinforces the urgent need for the Inspector General of Police to investigate the viral threat video against me and other members of my party,” Egbedun said.
He stressed that political disagreements must not be allowed to degenerate into violence, intimidation or threats to human life.
“Political differences must never become a justification for violence, intimidation, threats or attempts to endanger human lives,” he said.
The Speaker said he remained committed to the protection of lives, the rule of law, democratic values and the peaceful development of Osun State.
“I will not be intimidated by threats, intimidation or acts of violence. I will continue to stand for peace, justice and the democratic rights of our people,” he added.
Egbedun urged political actors across the state to resolve their differences through dialogue, democratic participation and elections rather than violence or intimidation.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Speaker had disclosed that his lawyers submitted a petition to the Inspector-General of Police over an alleged threat against him by Francis Eniade, the All Progressives Congress candidate for the Ifelodun/Boripe/Odo Otin Federal Constituency in the 2027 House of Representatives election.
Egbedun said the latest incident further strengthened his call for security agencies to investigate all alleged threats and take necessary steps to prevent political tension from escalating into violence.
