The Nigerian Army has graduated 1,178 troops from the 10th batch of its Advanced Infantry Training Programme, with the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Waidi Shaibu, charging them to respect the rule of law, protect human rights and adhere strictly to the rules of engagement during military operations.

The troops graduated on Friday under Exercise Restore Hope X at the Nigerian Army Training Centre in Kachia, Kaduna State, after completing a six-month advanced training programme designed to strengthen their combat proficiency and prepare them for contemporary security operations.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Shaibu said the Advanced Infantry Training Programme had become a key component of the Nigerian Army’s post-basic training framework and was designed to instil warrior ethos, sharpen combat skills and prepare personnel to confront emerging security threats.
He said the graduation came at a time when the Nigerian Army was undergoing significant force expansion and capability enhancement following the restructuring recently approved by President Bola Tinubu.
According to the Army chief, the restructuring has resulted in the establishment of additional divisions, formations and units, with many of the newly trained personnel expected to form the nucleus of the new formations.
Shaibu urged the graduates to justify the resources invested in their training through professionalism, sound judgment, discipline and commitment to assigned missions.
He warned that security threats were becoming increasingly sophisticated and required soldiers who could adapt quickly to changing operational environments.
The COAS identified terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, separatist agitations and transnational organised crime as some of the major security challenges confronting the country.
He charged the troops to remain physically fit, mentally alert, technologically proficient and innovative in responding to the tactics of adversaries.
Shaibu particularly emphasised the responsibility of soldiers to operate within the law, protect civilians and uphold the fundamental rights of persons encountered during military operations.
He said the training was consistent with his command philosophy of building a professional, adaptable, combat-ready and resilient Army capable of effectively responding to Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
The Army chief assured the troops that the service would continue to provide the necessary support required for them to discharge their duties effectively.
He also charged personnel selected to serve as instructors to approach their responsibilities with professionalism and commitment, stressing the importance of passing the skills acquired during the programme to other soldiers.
Earlier, the Chief of Training (Army), Major-General Valentine Okoro, said the graduation marked the successful completion of another cycle of the Army’s post-basic training programme.
Okoro explained that the six-month exercise was designed to equip personnel with the practical skills and knowledge necessary to operate effectively in contemporary military environments.
He disclosed that although the training programme was initially conducted with assistance from foreign partners, Nigerian instructors had since taken over its implementation and continued to improve its scope and effectiveness.
According to him, troops who graduated from previous editions of Exercise Restore Hope have made significant contributions to military operations across different theatres in the country.
During the latest programme, the trainees underwent instruction in tactical operations, marksmanship, weapon proficiency, field craft, endurance, combat medicine, leadership development and counter-insurgency operations.
Okoro said the training methodology placed particular emphasis on realism, teamwork, discipline and mission-oriented objectives.
He noted that improvements recorded in the trainees’ physical fitness, tactical competence, confidence and decision-making abilities demonstrated the effectiveness of the programme.
The Chief of Training said Exercise Restore Hope had developed into the Nigerian Army’s principal counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism training model and had been adapted across the Army’s training depots and tactical training centres.
He further disclosed that Shaibu had approved the issuance of Basic Infantry Course certificates and relevant trade certifications to the graduating personnel.
According to him, the programme had also helped standardise post-basic military training, improve instructional methods and identify personnel capable of becoming instructors.
Okoro said lessons obtained from Exercise Restore Hope X would be incorporated into reviews of the training curriculum for subsequent batches.
He commended the Chief of Army Staff, instructors, training partners, administrative personnel and other stakeholders for their contributions to the successful completion of the exercise.
The graduation ceremony also featured demonstrations of selected combat skills acquired by the troops during the six-month training programme.
