The Kano State Government on Friday conducted its mass wedding programme for 1,500 couples across the state, as part of its social welfare initiative aimed at supporting residents who face financial difficulties in starting families.

Among those who participated in the programme was Haruna Bashir, the Kano resident whose wife, Fatima Abubakar, and six children were murdered at their residence in Dorayi Chiranchi in January 2026.

Bashir’s participation followed an earlier pledge by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to support him in rebuilding his life after the tragedy.

Following the killings, the governor had approved a welfare package for Bashir which included sponsorship for Hajj and Umrah, provision of a new house, continued welfare assistance and support for him to remarry whenever he found a suitable partner.

The January attack attracted widespread outrage after assailants entered Bashir’s home and killed his 35-year-old wife and their six children.

Police subsequently arrested suspects in connection with the killings, while the Kano State Government took over their prosecution and later filed charges before the State High Court.

The mass wedding programme, coordinated by the Kano State Hisbah Board, is expected to benefit 1,500 couples, representing 3,000 individuals drawn from across the state.

The Commander-General of the Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, had earlier disclosed that Governor Yusuf approved approximately ₦1.5 billion for the exercise.

According to the Hisbah Board, the package includes household items, foodstuffs and financial assistance intended to help the newly married couples establish their homes.

Each groom was earmarked ₦100,000 as support towards the payment of dowry, while each bride was to receive ₦100,000 as seed capital to establish a small-scale business.

Other items announced for beneficiaries include beds, mattresses, bedsheets, pillows, wardrobes and food supplies.

Prospective couples were also subjected to medical screening for HIV, hepatitis, genotype compatibility and other health conditions before being cleared to participate in the programme.

The government said the initiative forms part of its wider social intervention programme aimed at assisting low-income residents, encouraging marriage and promoting stable families across Kano State.

Daurawa urged beneficiaries to approach marriage with patience, responsibility and mutual understanding and to seek reconciliation where disagreements arise rather than allowing disputes to immediately result in separation.

The wedding programme is being held across Kano’s 44 local government areas, with ceremonies and related activities scheduled between August 6 and August 9.

The Hisbah Board had announced that marriage counselling would take place on August 6, the weddings on August 7, a walima on August 8, and distribution of household and empowerment packages on August 9.
