Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, has cautioned President Bola Tinubu against relying solely on political calculations and endorsements ahead of the 2027 presidential election, drawing a comparison with the failed civilian transition ambition of the late military Head of State, General Sani Abacha.

Melaye, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, said political power and widespread support could not override what he described as the “God factor” in human affairs.

In a post on X on Wednesday, the former lawmaker recalled that the five registered political parties in the country at the time adopted Abacha as their presidential candidate during his military administration.

According to Melaye, Abacha appeared set to transform himself from a military ruler into a civilian president before his sudden death ended the transition plan.

“There is a God factor in the affairs of men. Tinubu does not understand this. Abacha was endorsed by all the five political parties at that time,” he wrote.

“There was no contest; he was already cruising to become a civilian president. God picked His phone and called Abacha.

“When God calls you, there is no network failure. That God has not gone on omugwo. Tinubu, watch it.”

Melaye’s remarks come amid growing political activities and realignments ahead of the 2027 general election.

The ADC chieftain appeared to suggest that endorsements and control of political structures do not necessarily guarantee electoral success or the fulfilment of political ambitions.

The Presidency had not publicly responded to Melaye’s remarks at the time of publication.
