…Unveils New Legal Year Activities
The Cross River State Judiciary has commenced its annual legal vacation for the 2026/2027 Legal Year, with two judges designated to hear urgent matters across the state during the period.
The vacation, which began on Monday, August 3, 2026, will end on Friday, September 25, 2026, according to a statement issued by the Chief Registrar of the Judiciary, Iquo Bassey Ekanem.
Justice Eno Ikpi Ebri has been designated as the vacation judge for the Calabar, Akamkpa, Akpabuyo and Ugep Judicial Divisions.
Justice Ebri will sit at High Court No. 8, Calabar, to hear urgent applications and other matters requiring immediate judicial attention within the designated divisions.
Justice Daniel Kulo will serve as the vacation judge for the Obubra, Ikom, Ogoja and Obudu Judicial Divisions and will sit at the High Court of Justice in Ogoja.
The Judiciary explained that special authority could also be granted to other judges, upon written application, to conclude urgent and pressing matters where necessary during the vacation.
While regular proceedings at the state High Courts will be limited throughout the period, all Magistrates’ Courts and Customary Courts across Cross River State will remain open and continue sitting.
The Judiciary also announced that the 2026/2027 Legal Year would formally commence on Monday, September 28, 2026, with a series of ceremonial activities in Calabar.
The activities will begin with a church service at The Apostolic Church, Nigeria, No. 32 Edgerley Road, Calabar, at 11 a.m.
The service will be followed by the inspection of a guard of honour mounted by a detachment of the Nigeria Police Force at the High Court Complex by the Chief Judge of Cross River State, Justice Akon Ikpeme.
A special court session will subsequently be held at High Court No. 1, Judiciary Headquarters, Mary Slessor Avenue, Calabar.
Judges, magistrates, judiciary employees, law officers and legal practitioners are expected to attend the ceremonies in their full robes.
The commencement of the new legal year will mark the full resumption of judicial activities across the state’s judicial divisions following the conclusion of the vacation.
