Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has criticised the Federal Government’s plan to increase electricity tariffs, saying Nigerians should not be made to bear the burden of the long-standing failures in the country’s power sector.

Falana, who spoke with journalists in Ilawe-Ekiti, Ekiti State, said the government should first provide stable, reliable and uninterrupted electricity before asking citizens to pay higher bills.

He recalled that President Bola Tinubu, during his election campaign, promised to improve electricity supply, stressing that Nigerians deserve better service and not increased charges for poor power supply.

“The government should provide uninterrupted electricity. That was a promise made by President Bola Tinubu when he was a candidate,” Falana said.

The senior lawyer also faulted the government’s position on the electricity sector after the privatisation of electricity distribution companies, saying the Federal Government cannot abandon consumers simply because private firms now manage distribution.

According to him, many owners of the distribution companies have close relationships with government officials, but such relationships should not prevent the government from holding them accountable for poor performance.

Falana said if the current privatisation arrangement is not delivering results, the government should either compel the companies to perform or take back control of the sector in the interest of Nigerians.

He maintained that the government should prioritise improving electricity generation, transmission and distribution instead of placing more financial pressure on citizens through higher tariffs.
