The Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy has clarified that the late Mary Habila was not a registered physiotherapist, following reports that identified her as one.

The Society made the clarification in a statement posted on its official X handle on Thursday.

According to the NSP, verification through the appropriate regulatory channels showed that the name “Mary Habila” does not appear in the database of registered physiotherapists.

“Following verification through the appropriate regulatory channels, the name ‘Mary Habila,’ as stated, does not appear on the database of registered physiotherapists,” the statement read.

The Society said the development showed the importance of due diligence, especially by public officials and persons in authority, before presenting or associating individuals with regulated professions.

It noted that public office carries a responsibility to ensure that information presented to Nigerians is accurate, verifiable and properly checked.

The NSP stressed that professional identity should not be based on assumption, public perception or speculation, but on verifiable facts and proper regulatory confirmation.

“The Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy has consistently maintained that professional identity is not a matter of assumption or public perception; it is a matter of verifiable fact,” it said.

The Society added that where questions arise over professional status, such issues should be resolved through appropriate regulatory processes rather than through unverified claims.

It said the clarification was necessary to protect the integrity of regulated professions and to ensure that professionals have their qualifications and identities represented truthfully.

The NSP urged stakeholders, public officials, media organisations and members of the public to ensure accuracy when referring to regulated professional titles.

It, however, said the clarification should not overshadow the tragedy surrounding Mary Habila’s death.

The Society extended condolences to her family, friends and loved ones, praying that they find strength and comfort during the difficult period.

“While it is important to establish the facts, we must not lose sight of the human tragedy at the heart of this matter. We extend our sincere condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the deceased, and pray that her soul rests in perfect peace,” the statement added.
