The Nigerian Bar Association has invited expressions of interest from suitably qualified legal practitioners for nomination and possible appointment as 10 additional judges of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The invitation followed a letter dated July 10, 2026, in which the Chief Judge of the FCT High Court requested the NBA President to nominate qualified persons for recommendation to the High Court Bench.

According to a notice issued on July 16, 2026, by the NBA National Publicity Secretary, Bridget Ijeoma Edokwe, the available positions are open to qualified candidates from Abia, Akwa Ibom, Katsina, Borno, Ebonyi, Lagos, Osun and Sokoto states.

Interested members of the NBA from the listed states are required to submit their expressions of interest to the association’s National Secretariat on or before July 20, 2026.

All applications are to be addressed to:

The President
Nigerian Bar Association
c/o Grace Igyo, Esq.
Head, Legal, Regulatory and Compliance Department
Nigerian Bar Association National Secretariat
Plot 1101 Muhammadu Buhari Way
Central Business District, Abuja

The NBA stated that applications received after the deadline would not be considered.

Each expression of interest must be accompanied by a copy of the applicant’s curriculum vitae and Call to Bar certificate.

Applicants must also submit evidence that they paid their Bar Practising Fees and NBA branch dues as and when due for the past 10 years.

Other required documents include evidence of attendance at NBA conferences and membership of the association’s sections or fora.

Legal practitioners applying for the positions must additionally provide certified true copies of at least six judgments arising from contested cases they conducted within the five years preceding the application.

Each applicant is also required to submit a letter of good standing from the chairman of their NBA branch.

The letter must confirm that the applicant possesses the qualities prescribed under Rule 4(4)(i)(a), (b) and (d) of the National Judicial Council Guidelines for the Appointment of Judicial Officers for Superior Courts of Record.

Under the guidelines, candidates must possess good character and reputation and demonstrate diligence, hard work, honesty, integrity, sound knowledge of the law and consistent adherence to professional ethics.

Where applicable, the applicant must also have a record of active and successful legal practice, including the satisfactory presentation of cases in court either as a private legal practitioner or a legal officer in the public service.

For applicants from academia, the guidelines also recognise a credible record of teaching law, conducting legal research in a reputable university and publishing legal works.

In addition to the physical application, interested candidates must upload electronic copies of their expressions of interest and accompanying documents through the designated online form:

The NBA said that after receiving the applications, its National Secretariat may publish the names of the interested candidates and invite comments from members of the association.

Shortlisted candidates may subsequently be invited to participate in a screening interview before nominations are forwarded for further consideration.

Applicants were also advised to prepare and deliver a similar expression of interest to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court on or before July 21, 2026, as stated in the NBA notice.

The association emphasised that submissions made after the respective deadlines would not be accepted.
