A biology lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, has reportedly been arrested following allegations that he attempted to sexually exploit a female student inside a campus laboratory.

The incident attracted widespread attention after a video surfaced online showing a man alleged to be the lecturer fleeing from a laboratory in his underwear as students attempted to apprehend him.

According to campus accounts, the lecturer had allegedly been pressuring a female student for sex. The student was said to have reported the matter to some of her colleagues, after which a plan was allegedly made to expose him.

Reports said the female student later entered the laboratory where the lecturer was waiting. She reportedly raised the alarm after he allegedly removed his clothes and attempted to make sexual advances towards her.

As students gathered outside the laboratory, the lecturer allegedly locked the door to prevent them from entering. In the viral video, some students were seen forcing the door open before the lecturer fled through a window.

The identities of the lecturer, the female student and the students involved in the incident have not been officially released by the university or law enforcement authorities.

The names are said to have been withheld because investigations are still ongoing and to protect the alleged victim from possible intimidation, victimisation or public exposure.

Following the circulation of the video, police reportedly tracked down and arrested the lecturer.

The development has triggered outrage among students and social media users, with many calling on the university authorities to conduct a transparent investigation and take disciplinary action where wrongdoing is established.

Student groups and online commentators have also urged the institution to strengthen safeguards against sexual harassment, abuse of authority and exploitation of students by lecturers.

As of the time of this report, the management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University had not released the names of those involved or issued full details of the disciplinary steps being taken.

The lecturer has not been convicted of any offence, and the allegations remain subject to investigation by the university and relevant law enforcement authorities.
