United States President Donald Trump has paid writer E. Jean Carroll more than $5.6 million after a civil jury found him liable for sexually abusing and defaming her, according to court filings.

Carroll’s lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, confirmed the payment on Tuesday, saying the damages awarded to her client had now been received.
“Three years ago, a unanimous nine-person jury found President Trump liable for sexually assaulting and defaming E. Jean Carroll,” Kaplan said in a statement.
“Today, we are pleased to report that she has received the damages payment the jury awarded her as a result of that verdict,” she added.
The payment followed the United States Supreme Court’s refusal in late June to hear Trump’s appeal against the original May 2023 judgment. The Supreme Court’s decision left standing the jury’s finding that Trump sexually abused Carroll and later defamed her.
A Manhattan federal court had earlier ordered the release of the money to Carroll after Trump deposited the jury award into the court’s registry while pursuing appeals. The original $5 million award had increased with interest, with reports putting the released amount at over $5.6 million and approximately $5.8 million.
The case arose from Carroll’s allegation that Trump sexually assaulted her in a department store dressing room in New York in the mid-1990s and later defamed her when he denied the allegation.
In May 2023, a federal civil jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation, but did not find him liable for rape under the legal standard presented to the jury. The jury awarded Carroll $5 million in damages.
Trump has repeatedly denied Carroll’s allegation, saying he did not know her and accusing her of fabricating the claim.
His lawyers had continued attempts to block or delay payment after the Supreme Court declined to review the case, but the court rejected the effort and authorised the release of the funds.
Carroll also secured a separate $83.3 million defamation judgment against Trump in 2024 over further statements he made about her. That separate award remains the subject of ongoing legal proceedings and appeals.
The latest payment marks a major enforcement step in the first Carroll judgment and closes one phase of the long-running civil litigation between the writer and Trump.
The case has remained one of the most prominent civil liability matters involving Trump, with the courts rejecting his bid to overturn the 2023 verdict.
