Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Saturday visited the 39 pupils and five teachers rescued after spending 56 days in captivity following their abduction in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.

The victims are receiving medical treatment and psychological evaluation at the Headquarters of the 2 Division Nigerian Army Medical Services, Odogbo Barracks, Ibadan.

Makinde, who was received by military medical personnel and security officials overseeing their care, interacted with the rescued pupils and teachers and assessed their physical and emotional condition.

The governor expressed gratitude to God over their safe return, describing the development as a major relief to their families and residents of Oyo State who had prayed for their release.

“Today is a day of gratitude to Almighty God. We are thankful that these innocent children and their teachers have regained their freedom after enduring a traumatic experience,” he said.

Makinde confirmed that all 39 abducted pupils and five of the seven teachers had been rescued through a coordinated security operation involving the Nigerian Army and other security agencies.

He commended the security personnel involved in the operation for their courage, professionalism and determination but disclosed that some operatives lost their lives during the rescue mission.

“Our joy today is tempered by the painful reality that some of our brave security personnel paid the ultimate price in the course of this operation,” the governor said.

“We mourn their loss, extend our heartfelt condolences to their families and assure them that their sacrifices will never be forgotten.”

Speaking on the victims’ condition, Makinde said many of them appeared physically exhausted and emotionally affected by their prolonged captivity.

He said they would receive comprehensive medical care, counselling and rehabilitation to enable them to recover fully before being reunited with their families.

According to him, the military authorities advised that the pupils and teachers remain under observation for 48 hours, after which a full medical and psychological assessment would be conducted.

“At the end of that period, a proper assessment will be conducted to determine their medical and psychological condition before they are formally handed over to the Oyo State Government for further care and rehabilitation,” he said.

The governor added that arrangements were being made for family members to visit the victims in a controlled environment that would not disrupt their treatment and recovery.

He disclosed that one of the rescued girls had repeatedly asked to see her mother since regaining freedom.

“We understand the emotional needs of these children. One of the young girls has consistently asked for her mother, and we are already making arrangements to reunite families in a controlled environment,” Makinde said.

Also at the military hospital were the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, and Senator Fatai Buhari, who separately visited the victims and offered words of encouragement and solidarity to them and their families.

Makinde urged Nigerians to remain united in confronting insecurity, stressing that security remained a collective responsibility requiring vigilance, cooperation and support for law-enforcement institutions.

The governor said his administration would provide a comprehensive briefing in the coming days on the circumstances surrounding the abduction and the collaborative efforts that led to the victims’ rescue.

“For now, our immediate concern is ensuring that these children and their teachers recover fully and are safely reunited with their families,” he said.
