The controversy surrounding the alleged fake Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, PFIPC, has deepened following the reported arrest of the father of Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi, the man accused of parading himself as Director-General of the disowned presidential council.

Police operatives reportedly stormed the family residence in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, on Monday and arrested Adeyemi’s father alongside a family friend who had visited the home that morning.
Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, confirmed the arrest and condemned it as unlawful, describing it as a case of substituted arrest.
“The father has been arrested. There is no legal basis for substituted arrests. The young man has promised to show up in court, so why arrest his father?” Falana said.
According to reports, eyewitnesses said the officers arrived at the residence in four vehicles and took the elderly man away, leaving Adeyemi’s aged mother in shock.
The arrest comes amid an ongoing forgery and impersonation case involving Adeyemi and the purported PFIPC, an organisation the Presidency has repeatedly disowned.
The Presidency had earlier issued a public disclaimer, saying the alleged organisation styled as the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council does not exist under President Bola Tinubu’s administration and that no appointment was made in favour of Adeyemi.
In the disclaimer signed by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, the Presidency advised foreign and diplomatic missions, financial institutions, multilateral organisations, development partners and security agencies to take note that the purported council was not recognised by the Federal Government.
The police have since filed an eight-count criminal charge against Adeyemi and others before the Federal High Court in Abuja over allegations of forgery, impersonation and the use of disputed official documents.
According to the charge, Adeyemi allegedly presented himself as Director-General of the purported council using forged government documents, including an alleged appointment letter purportedly issued from the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President.
Adeyemi has, however, denied wrongdoing and maintained that his appointment was legitimate.
Documents reviewed by PREMIUM TIMES showed that some government offices allegedly processed correspondence connected to the purported council before the Presidency publicly disowned it.
The report claimed that the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, OSGF; the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, OAGF; and the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, acted on some letters linked to the PFIPC after allegedly believing they originated from a legitimate agency under the Presidency.
The report further alleged that requests linked to office accommodation, self-accounting status, budget code and CBN accounts were processed in connection with the purported council.
However, the OAGF has denied that PFIPC operated any CBN account or received public funds or salaries.
The OAGF spokesperson, Bawa Mokwa, said although an account-opening process may have been initiated, it was never completed because the necessary documentation to activate the account was not submitted.
According to him, no public fund was released to the purported council and no salary was paid to any person through the organisation.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar had also called for an independent investigation into the scandal, saying the controversy had gone beyond allegations against one individual.
Atiku said the major question was how official government processes allegedly recognised, processed or advanced the affairs of an agency the Presidency insists never existed.
He said if Adeyemi committed any offence, he should face the law, but insisted that government institutions must also explain how the alleged activities passed through administrative, financial and security channels.
The latest arrest of Adeyemi’s father has now shifted attention to the conduct of security agencies in the matter, with Falana insisting that the police cannot lawfully arrest a relative in place of a suspect.
Legal observers say the development may raise fresh questions over due process, personal liberty and the limits of police powers in criminal investigations.
As of the time of this report, the police had yet to publicly respond to Falana’s allegation of substituted arrest.
