The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) on Monday filed a notice of appeal and a motion for a stay of execution against the Federal High Court’s judgment in Lokoja, Kogi State, which nullified its registration as a political party.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, confirmed this on Monday, insisting that the NDC remains determined to challenge the verdict through all available legal means.

According to him, the party has already lodged its notice of appeal and taken steps to halt execution of the judgment pending the appellate court’s determination of the case.

“The party has filed both its appeal and an application for a stay of execution regarding the judgment and is taking all necessary legal steps to protect its interests,” the Director told our reporter.

The Federal High Court sitting in Lokoja ordered the reversal of the NDC’s registration following a suit challenging the party’s recognition by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The judgment had sparked concerns within the party, particularly as political activities ahead of the 2027 general election continue to gather momentum.

However, the NDC has maintained that the judgment does not mark the end of the matter, insisting that it remains a legally recognised political platform pending the final determination of the appeal.

Party officials also expressed confidence that the appellate court would overturn the decision, arguing that the issues surrounding the party’s registration warrant a thorough judicial review.

The latest legal move is expected to set the stage for another round of court proceedings regarding the party’s status and its participation in future elections.

The NDC has, in recent weeks, insisted that its candidates will be on the ballot in the 2027 general election despite the legal setback, maintaining that the party remains committed to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process and providing an alternative political platform for Nigerians.
