British Conservative Party leader, Kemi Badenoch, has criticised outgoing United Kingdom Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, following his announcement that he will step down as Labour leader and leave office after less than two years in power.

Starmer announced his resignation on Monday in an emotional address outside 10 Downing Street, saying his decisions in office had been guided by what he believed was in the best interest of the country.
“Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country I love first. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party,” Starmer said.
He said he would remain Prime Minister until a new Labour leader is elected, with the leadership process expected to begin in July and conclude before Parliament returns from its summer recess in September.
Reacting to the announcement, Badenoch blamed Starmer’s record in government and the wider policy direction of the Labour Party for Britain’s challenges, insisting that the country itself was not ungovernable.
In a post on X, Badenoch accused the Labour government of adopting damaging policies on taxation, welfare, defence and energy, while also criticising political appointments made under Starmer.
“Hiking national insurance; The Family Farm Tax; Giving up on real welfare reform; Not funding our defence; Not drilling our own oil and gas; Appointing Peter Mandelson… then lying about what had happened,” she wrote.
“Britain is not ungovernable. Keir Starmer is a terrible Prime Minister. But the problem isn’t just Starmer.
“Labour MPs only want higher taxes to hand out more benefits, as the Welfare Secretary has pointed out. These are Labour’s choices and their values, regardless of who is running the party.
“We need to get Britain working again. We need the Conservatives.”
Badenoch argued that Starmer’s resignation did not address what she described as the deeper problem within Labour, saying the party’s economic and welfare policies reflected its broader political values.
Her comments followed months of political pressure on Starmer’s administration, including criticism over policy reversals, declining public approval, internal Labour concerns and questions over his leadership ahead of the next general election.
Starmer acknowledged the growing pressure within the Labour Party, saying he accepted the party’s judgment on whether he should continue leading it into the next election.
The outgoing Prime Minister also paid tribute to his wife, Vic, for her support during his time in office and said he hoped to spend more time with his family after leaving office.
His resignation brings an end to a turbulent tenure marked by difficult policy choices, internal party unease and increasing opposition attacks from the Conservatives and other political rivals.
The Labour Party is expected to begin the process of choosing his successor in July, with the transition expected to be completed before lawmakers return from the summer recess in September.
