United Kingdom Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, has announced his resignation as Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party, less than two years after leading the party to victory in the 2024 general election.

Starmer made the announcement in an emotional statement outside 10 Downing Street, saying he had accepted that his party no longer believed he was the right person to lead Labour into the next general election.
He said the question before the party had been whether he was “best placed” to lead it into the next election, adding that he had “heard the answer” and accepted it “with good grace.”
“I will resign as leader of the Labour Party,” Starmer said.
The outgoing Prime Minister said every decision he made in office was guided by his desire to put the country first.
He described becoming Prime Minister as the proudest moment of his life, recalling that he inherited a Labour Party he said was “politically, financially and morally bankrupt,” but worked to rebuild it and return it to government.
Starmer said he had already informed King Charles of his decision and would remain in office until Labour elects a new leader.
He said he had asked the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee to open nominations for the leadership on July 9 and ensure that the process is completed before Parliament returns from its summer break in September.
According to him, the timetable is intended to guarantee an orderly handover of power.
Starmer pledged to give his successor his full support, saying the next leader would inherit a country he described as stronger and fairer than when Labour took office.
He also thanked his colleagues, Downing Street staff and the civil service for their work during his tenure.
The Prime Minister became visibly emotional as he paid tribute to his wife, Victoria, describing her as his “rock” through good times and bad.
He said that after leaving “the biggest job in the country,” he would focus on what he called “the most important job” — being the best husband and father he could be to his wife and children.
Following his announcement, attention immediately shifted to who would succeed him as Labour leader and Prime Minister.
Andy Burnham, who recently won the Makerfield by-election and is expected to be sworn in as Member of Parliament, is being widely discussed as a leading contender for the Labour leadership.
There are indications within Labour that Burnham could emerge unopposed if no major challenger enters the race when nominations open.
However, other names, including Wes Streeting, have also been mentioned in connection with a possible contest.
Reacting to Starmer’s resignation, London Mayor Sadiq Khan described him as a man of integrity who had devoted his career to public service.
Khan said he and Starmer had been friends and colleagues since their days as young lawyers, adding that Starmer had made a major contribution to the Labour Party and the country.
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage called for a general election at the earliest possible date, arguing that a change of Labour leader would not be enough to give the next Prime Minister a fresh mandate.
Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey said the public was tired of what he described as an endless merry-go-round of Prime Ministers, insisting that Britain needed more than a change of occupant in Number 10.
Starmer’s resignation marks another major moment in British politics and opens a fresh leadership battle within the Labour Party.
Until the process is concluded, he will remain Prime Minister while Labour decides who will take over both the party leadership and government.
