Former Kaduna lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has criticised the Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, Ireti Kingibe, for speaking out months after the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan by the Senate.

Kingibe had on Wednesday said she never saw the report that led to the suspension of the Kogi Central Senator.

Her disclosure came amid earlier claims linked to Senator Adams Oshiomhole that some senators’ signatures were allegedly forged in the report used to suspend Natasha. Although Oshiomhole later said he was misquoted, the controversy has continued to generate reactions.

Kingibe said she was at a retreat with Oshiomhole when she heard about the report.

“I never saw the report that led to Natasha’s suspension. I was at a retreat. I had earlier stated that I was there with three or four other senators who are members of the committee.

“We attended the Committee on Petitions and Public Complaints, signed the attendance register, and I later left for the tax reform retreat, which I considered more important at the time.

“It affects my constituents much more than disciplining a senator, and I figured that the other people who were not part of that committee would take care of it.

“I even complained to other senators, specifically to Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe. I complained to him very bitterly that I had not seen that report. I didn’t see it then. I have not seen it till now,” she said.

Reacting in a post on his X handle, Sani questioned why the FCT senator waited until now to raise the issue publicly.

He said a senator whose name or signature was used without consent ought to have immediately raised a point of order on the floor of the Senate and publicly dissociated himself or herself from the action.

“If you are in the Senate and your name or signature was used by the leadership without your consent, you don’t have to wait till the next day or remain silent until the objective is achieved.

“You should simply raise a point of order on the floor and publicly denounce the act and disassociate yourself from it. That is how it’s done,” Sani wrote.

The development has also sparked reactions on social media, with some Nigerians questioning why Kingibe did not speak out earlier.

Natasha has since completed her suspension and returned to the Senate.
