Edo Queens have been crowned champions of the Nigeria Women Football League for the 2025/26 season after finishing top of the NWFL Premiership Super Six playoffs in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The Benin City-based side sealed the title on Sunday after playing out a 0-0 draw with Bayelsa Queens in their final playoff fixture at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.

Before the game, Edo Queens were on nine points and needed only a draw to be confirmed champions. The result took Moses Aduku’s side to 10 points from five matches, enough to finish ahead of Bayelsa Queens and Nasarawa Amazons.

The triumph marks Edo Queens’ second NWFL title in three years.

Bayelsa Queens, who needed victory to overtake Edo Queens, finished second on eight points, while Nasarawa Amazons also ended with eight points after missing the chance to claim the title following a goalless draw with Rivers Angels.

In the other final-day fixture, Abia Angels and FC Robo Queens also played out a draw.

The final standings saw Edo Queens finish first with 10 points, followed by Bayelsa Queens and Nasarawa Amazons on eight points each. Abia Angels ended the Super Six with six points, while FC Robo Queens and Rivers Angels finished with four points each.

Celebrating the achievement, Edo Queens described their campaign as a “victory anthem,” writing: “Edo Queens have been dropping chart-toppers all season, and the final track is gold! NWFL 2025/2026 secured — the victory anthem is loud, proud, and unstoppable. Adaaa Edo Queens.”

With the victory, Edo Queens will now represent Nigeria at the WAFU-B Cup, which serves as the qualifying tournament for the CAF Women’s Champions League.

At the end of the Super Six, FC Robo Queens’ Oluwakemi Adegbuyi was named the 2025/26 NWFL Premiership Player of the Season following an impressive campaign.

Fatima Okolo of Abia Angels won the Goalkeeper of the Season award, while Rivers Angels received the Fair Play Award in recognition of their conduct on and off the pitch.

The top scorer award was jointly won by Rivers Angels’ Abasiofoh Uwah and Edo Queens’ Atume Doorsuur, who both finished with 13 goals.

Following the victory, Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, congratulated Edo Queens, describing their success as a display of resilience, discipline, determination and exceptional quality throughout the tournament.

“Winning this prestigious title for the second time is a remarkable achievement and a testament to the consistency, excellence, and determination that define the Edo people,” the governor wrote on his X handle.

“On behalf of the Government and good people of Edo State, I congratulate and celebrate the players, coaching crew, management, and supporters of Edo Queens for this remarkable achievement.”

Okpebholo said the victory was not only a triumph for the club but also an inspiration to young girls across Edo State and beyond to dream big, work hard and pursue excellence.

He added that his administration remained committed to supporting sports development and creating opportunities for young people to excel nationally and internationally.

Also reacting, former Edo State Deputy Governor and Director-General of the National Institute for Sports, Philip Shaibu, described the title as a well-deserved reward for the players, coaches and officials of Edo Queens.

“You have not only brought glory to Edo State — you have shown the world the power and potential of women’s football in Nigeria,” Shaibu said.

He commended the Edo State Government for its commitment to sports development and urged Edo Queens to carry the same spirit into continental competition.

“To the Edo Queens: Africa awaits you. Go and make us proud,” he added.
