The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, as a public holiday to mark this year’s Democracy Day celebration.

The declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.

In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Federal Government said June 12 remains a significant date in Nigeria’s democratic journey.

The government said the day honours the courage, resilience and sacrifices of Nigerians whose efforts helped to make democratic governance possible in the country.

According to the statement, the legacy of those who struggled for democracy continues to shape the values and responsibilities of the Nigerian state.

“Their legacy continues to inform the values and responsibilities of the Nigerian state,” the government said.

Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the commitment of the Federal Government to democratic values, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance.

He said the administration remained committed to upholding those principles without compromise.

The minister also stated that the Ministry of Interior, in coordination with relevant security agencies, would continue to strengthen internal security measures aimed at protecting lives and property across the country.

According to him, a secure and stable environment is necessary for the growth of democracy and national development.

Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to use the Democracy Day holiday as a period for reflection and renewed commitment to lawful conduct, responsible civic engagement and national unity.

“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” he said.

He added that the occasion should remind citizens of the need to protect democratic institutions and promote values that strengthen national cohesion.

The Federal Government further called on Nigerians to remain peaceful and committed to the ideals of democracy as the country marks the historic June 12 anniversary.
