The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, has grounded a privately owned aircraft after it allegedly landed on a roadway near Asaba and subsequently departed for Lagos without the required regulatory approval.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.

In a statement issued by the NCAA Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, the Authority said the aircraft conducted a missed approach at about 7:43 a.m. local time while attempting to land in Asaba, Delta State.

According to the NCAA, the aircraft later landed on a roadway in the Ogwashi-Uku area near Asaba.

The Authority said reports received from personnel at the scene indicated that all occupants safely exited the aircraft and were transported to Asaba by road.

The aircraft reportedly had four crew members on board, and no injury was recorded.

However, the NCAA said preliminary information available to it showed that the aircraft later departed the location at about 1102 GMT and returned to Lagos without obtaining the necessary regulatory approval.

The Authority said it was also informed that Air Traffic Control was notified only after the aircraft had already become airborne.

According to the NCAA, the action constitutes a violation of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations, Nig. CARs, and is currently under investigation.

“Upon its arrival in Lagos, the NCAA immediately grounded the aircraft pending the outcome of its investigation,” the statement said.

The Authority added that the flight crew had been placed under regulatory review while further inquiries continue into the circumstances surrounding the occurrence and the subsequent unauthorised departure of the aircraft.

The NCAA said it had formally notified the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, NSIB, of the incident and was coordinating with relevant aviation stakeholders, including the operator and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, NAMA, to establish the full circumstances surrounding the matter.

In the interim, the NCAA said it had suspended the operator’s Permit for Non-Commercial Flight, PNCF.

The Authority further stated that it would review all operational, airworthiness, maintenance and flight-related records as part of its statutory responsibilities.

It warned that further enforcement action would be taken in accordance with applicable aviation regulations after the conclusion of the investigation.
