The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Most Rev Matthew Kukah, has decried worsening insecurity in Nigeria, warning that the situation is bringing the country to its knees and calling for stronger leadership to address mounting national challenges.

Kukah spoke on Monday in Lagos at the inaugural memorial lecture marking the fifth anniversary of Pastor Emily Aig-Imoukhuede, themed “Leadership and Service to God, Nation and Humanity.”

A statement detailing the event was received on Monday.

He said Nigeria’s security and governance challenges underscored the urgent need for leaders who understand their environment and can provide clear direction.

“Leadership is about influence, discernment, clear vision and purpose,” Kukah said, adding that effective governance requires leaders to master the terrain in which they operate.

Drawing lessons from Singapore’s transformation, the cleric urged Nigerian leaders to emulate countries that have successfully overcome development challenges through disciplined and effective leadership.

Kukah also reflected on the life of the late Emily Aig-Imoukhuede, describing her as a figure committed to service and compassion, particularly for children and the less privileged. He said her values went beyond status or wealth and were rooted in service to humanity.

In his welcome address, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede said the memorial lecture was intended to go beyond remembrance, serving instead as a platform for reflection on leadership, citizenship and nation-building.

He said the initiative was designed to preserve his mother’s values and promote discussion on the responsibilities that accompany leadership, especially at a time of global uncertainty and social change.

Aig-Imoukhuede said his mother remained deeply committed to Nigeria and never lost faith in its future, adding that she believed “every gift carried a responsibility and every opportunity carried an obligation.”

Former Guaranty Trust Bank Managing Director, Fola Adeola, also spoke at the event, describing leadership as both a burden and a privilege rooted in service, fairness and moral responsibility.
