Former Chief of Staff to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, Mustapha Bala Dawaki, has defected to the Nigerian Democratic Congress.

Dawaki, a former member of the House of Representatives who represented Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency in Kano State, joined the opposition party barely one week after losing his return ticket in the APC through a consensus arrangement.

The defection was confirmed on Monday by Saifullahi Hassan, media aide to former Kano State Governor and Kwankwasiyya leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

According to Hassan, Dawaki was formally received into the NDC Kwankwasiyya fold at Kwankwaso’s Miller Road residence in Kano.

“Leader Kwankwaso has today accepted the former Chief of Staff to the APC National Chairman, Mustapha Bala Dawaki, Mai Gidan Ruwa, to the NDC Kwankwasiyya,” Hassan wrote on his verified Facebook page.

Dawaki’s defection comes at a time the NDC is currently deciding candidates for various elective positions in Kano State through consensus.

It is, however, not yet clear whether Dawaki will be given an automatic ticket to contest for his former seat under the NDC platform.

His exit adds to the growing political realignments trailing recent party primaries and consensus arrangements ahead of the 2027 general elections.
