Former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Lagos Branch, Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, FCIArb (UK), has condemned the fatal shooting of Mr. Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State, describing the incident as tragic, unfortunate and deeply regrettable.

In a press statement, Akangbe said he received the news of Ogidi’s killing, which occurred on April 26, 2026, with profound shock and sadness.

He said the incident once again highlights the need for security operatives to strictly comply with the rule of law in the discharge of their duties.

“I express my profound shock and deep sadness over the tragic and unfortunate killing of Mr. Mene Ogidi, who was fatally shot on 26th April 2026 in Effurun, Delta State,” he said.

“This incident is deeply regrettable and once again highlights the critical importance of strict compliance with the rule of law by all security operatives.”

Akangbe commended the Inspector-General of Police for what he described as the swift and decisive response taken after the incident.

He noted that the steps included the withdrawal of all officers involved, the commencement of expedited disciplinary proceedings and the investigation conducted through the Force Disciplinary Committee.

“I commend the Inspector-General of Police for the swift and decisive response taken immediately after the incident, including the withdrawal of all officers involved, the commencement of expedited disciplinary proceedings, and the thorough investigation conducted through the Force Disciplinary Committee,” he stated.

The senior advocate, however, said that while the steps taken by the police authorities were welcome, the gravity of the incident remained deeply concerning.

According to him, the sanctity of human life is fundamental and must never be compromised.

He stressed that the use of lethal force by security operatives must at all times remain within the limits of law, necessity and proportionality.

“The sanctity of human life is fundamental and must never be compromised. The use of lethal force must at all times remain strictly within the bounds of law, necessity, and proportionality,” Akangbe said.

“Any deviation from this standard is unacceptable in a democratic society governed by the rule of law.”

He called for justice in the matter to go beyond disciplinary measures, insisting that the process must be transparent, thorough and complete.

Akangbe said this was necessary to reinforce public confidence in Nigeria’s security and justice institutions.

“It is imperative that justice in this matter is not only pursued through disciplinary measures but is also seen to be transparent, thorough, and complete, so as to reinforce public confidence in our security and justice institutions,” he said.

The former NBA Lagos Branch chairman said the incident further underscores the urgent need for continued reforms within the policing system.

He identified key areas requiring reform to include strengthened training on rules of engagement, enhanced accountability mechanisms and a zero-tolerance approach to abuse of power.

Akangbe extended his condolences to the family and loved ones of the late Mene Ogidi, praying that they find strength and comfort in the painful moment.

He added that Nigerians must remain steadfast in demanding a country where the rule of law is not merely professed but consistently upheld in practice.

“We must collectively remain steadfast in our demand for a Nigeria where the rule of law is not merely professed, but consistently upheld in practice,” he stated.
