The Nigerian Law Society has commended the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Olatunji Disu, for ordering the immediate dismissal and criminal prosecution of ASP Nuhu Usman and five other officers implicated in the killing of Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State.

In a statement issued in Abuja on April 30, 2026, and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Lilian O. Uche, the NLS described the action taken by the IGP as decisive, but said it would monitor the case to ensure that justice is fully served.

The society said the killing, which occurred on April 26, 2026, amounted to a gross violation of the constitutional right to life and a betrayal of the duty imposed on law enforcement officers.

According to the NLS, the extrajudicial killing of a citizen is a heinous crime that strikes at the foundation of democracy and the rule of law.

The society said it received with “cautious commendation” the steps taken by the IGP, particularly his declaration that “no uniform is a licence to kill” and that the era of impunity within the police force must end.

It stated that the swift internal disciplinary process, which resulted in the recommendation for the dismissal of the affected officers, had set an important precedent.

However, the NLS stressed that internal disciplinary action, though necessary, must only be treated as the first step toward comprehensive justice.

The society called for the criminal prosecution of the officers for unlawful homicide to be conducted with transparency, urgency and strict compliance with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.

It warned that the legal process must not be compromised by any form of internal or external interference.

The NLS also urged the Police Service Commission to expedite the ratification of the dismissal recommendation so that the officers can be formally removed from the Nigeria Police Force and made to face criminal charges as civilians.

It said, “We urge the Police Service Commission to expedite the ratification of the dismissal order, ensuring that the officers are formally severed from the Force without delay to face criminal charges as civilians.”

Beyond the case of Mene Ogidi, the society called for a comprehensive audit of the Nigeria Police Force’s compliance with Force Order 247 and all standard operating procedures governing the use of firearms.

According to the NLS, the alleged disregard for those protocols points to a deeper institutional problem requiring urgent reform.

“The wanton disregard for these protocols suggests a systemic rot that requires urgent and deep-rooted reform,” it said.

The society unequivocally condemned the conduct of ASP Usman and his team, saying their actions had brought the Nigeria Police Force into grave disrepute.

It also extended condolences to the family, friends and community of the late Mene Ogidi, noting that while no legal outcome could replace the life lost, a transparent and successful prosecution would honour his memory and help restore public faith in the criminal justice system.

The NLS said it would deploy its observatory mechanisms to monitor the case from the dismissal stage to final prosecution, to ensure that the promise that justice would not only be done but seen to be done is fully kept.

The society reaffirmed its commitment to the defence of fundamental human rights and said it would continue to hold the state and its agents accountable to Nigerians.
