President Bola Tinubu has accused unnamed political enemies of attempting to exploit the insecurity in parts of the country to remove him from office, declaring that he remains determined to seek re-election in 2027.

Tinubu spoke on Tuesday night at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, when he received a 32-member delegation of Plateau State stakeholders led by Governor Caleb Mutfwang.

The meeting came a day after the President reportedly obtained his nomination and expression of interest forms to run for a second term in office.

Addressing the delegation, Tinubu said criticism of his administration over insecurity was being weaponised by those he described as agents and enemies seeking to destabilise his government.

“You are playing to the hand of agents, including my own enemies, who want to use insecurity to get rid of me. But I’m a very stubborn politician. I just refuse to go. And I will campaign for my second term,” he said.

The President’s remarks came amid renewed concerns over killings, kidnappings and attacks in several parts of the country, particularly Plateau State, where recent violence has claimed several lives.

Tinubu said his administration was determined to address the recurring violence in Plateau, urging leaders from the state to examine previous White Papers on the crises and come up with practical and implementable recommendations.

“No protocols, no hindrances, we are here to speak our minds and find a permanent solution to a recurring conflict and chaos,” he said.

“I have heard the leaders. Everybody here is seeking peace. How do we chart our path to that peace?”

The President called on Plateau leaders to embrace tolerance, fairness and inclusion, stressing that the state must be rescued from those who recruit people to instigate ethnic and religious violence.

“We all must find a way to accommodate one another. We must stop the situation where people are recruited to instigate tribal conflict and killings,” Tinubu said.

He directed the delegation to return home, meet among themselves, review previous recommendations on peace efforts and agree on those that should be implemented.

“Take the gazette, review the previous recommendations and agree to implement the White Paper. Bring to my attention any knotty issue that may arise and bring up an implementable resolution,” he said.

Tinubu also urged Governor Mutfwang and other Plateau leaders to identify troublemakers, agents and provocateurs behind the killings for prosecution.

“If you identify and you know the name of troublemakers, agents or provocateurs who want to continue killing or instigate killing, let us know. We will use the instrument of office to deal with them,” he said.

The President further endorsed the newly constituted peace committee involving former governors of Plateau State, urging them to work together as one body to produce recommendations capable of ending the violence.

He said, “Call one another. Take that White Paper, go through it among yourselves and agree to implement it. If the ones you have chosen before now are not working, you have to mix and amend membership.”

During the meeting, Tinubu approved N2 billion relief support for victims of the March 29 attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Mohammed Dorro, announced the intervention during the interactive session.

Tinubu assured the delegation that his administration remained committed to the peace, security and infrastructural development of Plateau State.

Governor Mutfwang thanked the President for convening the meeting and for showing commitment to resolving the state’s security challenges.

He said the gathering was historic, noting that it was the first time all former governors of Plateau State were meeting in one room with other critical stakeholders to discuss peace.

“Our coming here today shows that there is a renewed spirit on the Plateau. We are determined more than ever to close all our gaps and rise above divides of religion and ethnicity,” Mutfwang said.

The governor pledged Plateau State’s support for the President’s efforts to rebuild the country.

Also speaking, the Gbong Gwom Jos, Jacob Gyang Buba, commended Tinubu’s leadership and peace efforts, while requesting more troops, installation of CCTV cameras and support for displaced persons to return to their communities.

Youth representatives from Christian and Muslim groups also pledged to work together for peace and support the governor’s initiatives.

Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Idris Wase, called for strict enforcement of the rule of law, adding that drug abuse was contributing significantly to insecurity in the state.

Tinubu’s claim that insecurity was being used by his opponents to weaken his government echoes similar remarks made by former President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of the 2015 general elections, when he alleged that the Boko Haram insurgency was part of a plot to bring down his administration.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio had also recently linked rising insecurity to the approaching 2027 elections, alleging that some people were sponsoring violence to distract the Tinubu administration.

At the meeting, Tinubu insisted that despite the challenges, his administration would not be derailed, saying he would remain focused on governance and his re-election bid.
