The Labour Party (LP) will hold its national convention today under the leadership of the Senator Nenadi Usman-led caretaker committee, amid a lingering leadership crisis with the faction loyal to former National Chairman, Julius Abure.

The convention, scheduled to take place in Umuahia, Abia State, is expected to attract delegates from across the country and address key party matters, including leadership structure and future political direction.
The development comes after a series of court rulings that recognised the Nenadi Usman-led caretaker committee as the party’s leadership.
A Federal High Court in Abuja had earlier sacked Abure as national chairman and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise the caretaker committee pending the conduct of a national convention.
The decision was upheld by the Court of Appeal, which dismissed Abure’s appeal and affirmed the leadership of the Usman-led committee.
However, the Abure faction has rejected the appellate court judgment and vowed to challenge it at the Supreme Court.
Abure and his supporters insist that the court lacks the jurisdiction to interfere in the internal affairs of the party, maintaining that he remains the valid national chairman.
The leadership dispute in the party has lingered for months, with both factions laying claim to the party’s structure.
The crisis is linked to disagreements over tenure, internal party processes, and control of party organs.
Party sources said today’s convention is expected to ratify the caretaker committee’s position and possibly elect or affirm new leaders in line with court directives.
Our correspondent tried contacting the Abure faction, but there was no response as to whether or not they will be part of the convention.
As the convention holds today, attention is also on the Supreme Court, where the Abure faction is expected to challenge the Appeal Court ruling in a bid to reclaim leadership of the party.
