The Nigerian legal academy is celebrating the elevation of Dr. Nnamdi George Ikpeze PhD, KSC, to the rank of full Professor at the College of Law, Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti  a milestone that crowns fourteen years of dedicated service to the institution, vindicates the university founder’s renowned ability to identify and nurture exceptional talent, and extends what is arguably one of the most remarkable academic dynasties in Nigerian history a traditional family of professors spanning two generations, three universities, and five distinct disciplines.

Professor Ikpeze’s elevation, which took effect from October, 2024, was recently confirmed by the university, completing an academic journey that began when he joined ABUAD as a young lecturer shortly after obtaining his LL.M in 2011 and has culminated in the highest academic rank attainable in the university system.

The achievement carries extraordinary resonance when placed in the context of the Ikpeze family’s academic heritage a family that can only be described as a traditional family of professors.

Professor Nnamdi Ikpeze’s father, Prof. Okay C. Ikpeze, is a well-known Professor of Medicine and President of SOGON (Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria), while his mother, Prof. Ogugua V.C. Ikpeze, is a renowned Professor of Law. Both are distinguished scholars from Anambra State, and the professorial tradition extends far beyond his parents.

His father’s full siblings all children of the late Reverend George I. Ikpeze and Madam Zinobia U. Ikpeze, both of blessed memory include three additional professors: Professor Nnaemeka I. Ikpeze of the Department of Economics, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (retired); Professor Nkoli Ezumah of the Department of Sociology, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (retired); and Professor Obiora O. Ikpeze of the Department of Parasitology and Entomology, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Unizik.

This means the Ikpeze family boasts no fewer than six professors across two generations spanning medicine, law, economics, sociology, parasitology, and legal academia a distinction that is virtually unprecedented in Nigerian academic history and speaks to an extraordinary family tradition of intellectual excellence rooted in the values instilled by the late Reverend and Madam Ikpeze.

That Professor Nnamdi Ikpeze has now joined this illustrious roll earning the title through his own merit, scholarship, and fourteen years of dedicated academic service is a continuation of a family legacy that has enriched Nigerian academia across multiple disciplines and institutions.

The elevation of Professor Ikpeze is being hailed across the legal community as further evidence of the visionary leadership of Aare Afe Babalola SAN CON, the founder of ABUAD, whose commitment to building a world-class university has included an exceptional ability to identify and invest in young scholars with the potential for academic greatness.

When Babalola recruited the young Nnamdi Ikpeze to join ABUAD’s College of Law in 2011, the institution was barely two years old and still establishing its academic identity. To spot a young lawyer fresh from his master’s degree trained in the chambers of the eminent Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu OON SAN in Onitsha and provide the environment for him to grow from an associate lecturer to a full professor within the same institution, is a testament to the culture of academic excellence and talent development that Babalola has built at ABUAD.

The university’s investment in Ikpeze’s development supporting his progression through the academic ranks, facilitating his doctoral research, and providing the institutional framework for his prolific scholarly output reflects the philosophy that has made ABUAD one of Nigeria’s most respected private universities in barely fifteen years of existence.

Professor Ikpeze’s academic journey is distinguished by its breadth, depth, and consistency.

He attended the prestigious Dennis Memorial Grammar School in Onitsha one of the oldest and most respected secondary schools in Eastern Nigeria before proceeding to Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, where he obtained his LL.B in 2004.

He attended the Nigerian Law School between 2005 and 2006 and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2006. After his mandatory National Youth Service, he joined Ikpeazu Chambers in Onitsha in January 2008, where under the tutelage of Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu OON SAN one of Nigeria’s most distinguished trial advocates he gained extensive litigation experience that would later inform his academic work.

He obtained his LL.M in 2011 and commenced lecturing at ABUAD shortly thereafter. In the 2019/2020 academic session, he completed his PhD at Nnamdi Azikiwe University returning to the institution where his academic journey began to achieve its highest research degree.

His specialisations in Environmental Law, the Law of Evidence, and Jurisprudence have produced numerous published papers spanning anti-corruption, environmental regulation, consumer protection, and other areas. He has also edited multiple law journals, contributing to the development of legal scholarship in Nigeria.

What distinguishes Professor Ikpeze from many academics is the breadth of his contributions beyond traditional scholarship.

At ABUAD, he has served as the pioneer Chair of the College Committee on Students Discipline and Dress-code Enforcement since 2011 — a position that shaped the disciplinary culture of the law college from its earliest years. He served as Principal Staff Adviser to the Law Students Society from 2012 to 2016, and as Moot and Mock Trials and Competitions Coordinator from 2013 to 2016, leading students to successful performances in national and international competitions.

He has served on over 20 committees of Afe Babalola University — a level of institutional service that reflects both the trust reposed in him and his commitment to the university beyond his departmental responsibilities.

He served as Acting Head of the Public International Law Department from April 2021 to May 2025, providing leadership to one of the college’s key academic departments.

He is also a Research Fellow in Natural Resources, Energy and Environment at the Institute for Oil, Gas, Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development — connecting his academic expertise to the practical challenges of Nigeria’s energy sector.

Professor Ikpeze has maintained an active corporate legal practice alongside his academic career, with particular expertise in energy transactions, project finance, and power sector advisory.

He specialises in joint ventures in the power sector and provides lender/borrower project and corporate finance advisory, working with companies on Nigerian investment laws, business and regulatory compliance, and financial regulatory matters.

His most notable corporate achievement was advising on the successful completion and delivery of a 4.8-megawatt Independent Power Plant at Afe Babalola University a project that gave the university reliable power supply and demonstrated the practical application of academic expertise in energy law.

Professor Ikpeze’s contributions to the Nigerian Bar Association have been extensive and recognised.

A member of the Idemili Branch of the NBA, he served as National Vice Chairman of the Young Lawyers Forum from 2012 to 2014 a position that gave him a platform to advocate for the interests of young lawyers across Nigeria.

He has served the NBA as a rapporteur at national events and was a major donor towards the construction of the Idemili Bar Centre putting his resources behind the development of infrastructure for the local legal community.

He has also been a major donor to the NBA Ado-Ekiti Branch, including significant contributions to the branch’s most recent Law Week demonstrating his commitment to the legal community in the city where he has built his academic career.

The NBA Ado-Ekiti Branch recognised his contributions with an award for his mentoring of young lawyers acknowledging that his impact extends beyond his own branch to the legal community in Ado-Ekiti and beyond.

Professor Ikpeze holds membership in several professional bodies, including the Nigerian Institute of Chartered Arbitrators as an Associate Member, the Nigerian Association of Law Teachers, and the Nigerian Bar Association.

He is a Knight of St. Christopher (KSC), reflecting his commitment to the Anglican faith, and a Past President of his Lions Club, demonstrating his engagement in community service beyond the legal profession.

The story of the Ikpeze family is, in many ways, the story of Nigeria’s intellectual aspirations at their finest.

From the household of the late Reverend George I. Ikpeze and Madam Zinobia U. Ikpeze whose values of education, service, and excellence produced five professors among their children to the next generation, where their grandchild Professor Nnamdi Ikpeze has now earned the title through his own distinguished scholarship, the family represents a living testament to the transformative power of education and the importance of intellectual traditions that are passed from generation to generation.

That this tradition spans the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, and Afe Babalola University three institutions across three different states and encompasses medicine, law, economics, sociology, parasitology, and legal academia, makes the Ikpeze family one of the most academically distinguished families in Nigerian history.

Professor Nnamdi George Ikpeze’s elevation to the professorial chair is a well-deserved recognition of fourteen years of dedicated service to legal education, prolific scholarship, exemplary institutional citizenship, active corporate practice, and generous service to the Nigerian Bar.

His journey from Dennis Memorial Grammar School in Onitsha to Ikpeazu Chambers in Onitsha to the professorial chair at ABUAD is a testament to the power of mentorship, hard work, family tradition, and the kind of institutional investment in talent that Aare Afe Babalola has made the hallmark of his university.

He is married with children.

The legal community congratulates Professor Ikpeze and wishes him continued excellence in his academic, professional, and personal endeavours.
