Ebonyi State Governor and leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Francis Nwifuru, has declared that the party will not support unpopular aspirants without verifiable achievements in their current or previous positions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Nwifuru made the position known while joining the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate and Senator representing Ebonyi North Senatorial District, Peter Nwebonyi, to commission completed projects and inspect ongoing ones across the district. He was represented at the event by the state APC Chairman, Stanley Emegha.

According to the governor, the party will conduct a thorough assessment of aspirants’ performance records, stressing that only those with visible and impactful contributions to their constituencies would be considered for party tickets.

He commended Senator Nwebonyi for attracting what he described as life-impacting projects, including the construction of a three-bedroom bungalow for the APC woman leader in Izzi Local Government Area, Mrs Felicia Ogbonna. Nwifuru noted that such initiatives would boost grassroots development and encourage greater participation of women in politics, urging other lawmakers to emulate the senator.

“The time for stock-taking has come, and only those with results and visible achievements will be considered again to fly our party’s tickets for the next general elections,” he said, warning that those without tangible records of performance would be excluded.

In his remarks, Senator Nwebonyi said his projects were driven by the need to complement the developmental efforts of the governor within the senatorial district. He pledged to raise the bar in representative governance if re-elected in 2027.

He explained that his interventions, particularly in education, were aimed at addressing the challenge of out-of-school children by improving learning environments through the construction of classroom blocks and other facilities.

Across Abakaliki, Izzi and Ebonyi Local Government Areas, traditional rulers, community leaders and residents expressed satisfaction with the projects, describing them as clear dividends of democracy. The commissioned and inspected projects include roads, classrooms and street lighting.

Meanwhile, the development has sparked reactions among some Nigerians, with critics questioning whether such an approach could undermine internal party democracy by allowing party leadership to determine candidacy, rather than leaving the decision solely to voters through open electoral processes.
