President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has promised that measures will be put in place to ensure that the killings that took place in Jos, the Plateau State capital, last weekend do not recur, announcing plans to install over 5,000 cameras to assist security agencies in apprehending perpetrators of heinous crimes.

The President made the promise on Thursday during a condolence visit to Plateau State following the deadly Palm Sunday attacks that claimed at least 28 lives in the Angwan Rukuba area of Jos North Local Government Area.

Addressing residents of Plateau during his visit, President Tinubu acknowledged the limitations of material compensation in the face of such devastating loss.

“And I have to fly back within the next ten minutes. To you leaders, I’ve heard this. To the victims, there is nothing I can give you,” Tinubu said.

“Whether money, billions, but I console you, I promise you, that this experience will not repeat itself.”

He added: “We will try our best to comfort you, to work with you. The best solution is for Jos to be just. The world that people like us grew up to know.”

The President announced that the Minister for Communication would immediately install a network of cameras to help law enforcement agencies identify troublemakers.

“The Minister for Communication is going to install immediately a network of cameras that will help the law enforcement agencies to identify the troublemakers instantly. Over 5,000. We will do a network. But as soon as you can,” Tinubu stated.

In a poignant moment during the visit, President Tinubu consoled a grieving mother who was seen in a viral video clutching the lifeless body of her son following the attack.

The President addressed the woman by name, referencing the video that captured her anguish.

“I know the pain; I saw how, in the video, you held on to your son, Ayuba, and the pain and agony in your heart, but it’s only God who can give you joy and comfort,” Tinubu said while addressing victims’ families and representatives.

He assured them of government support: “No amount of money can pay all of you back. As a government, we will do our best to comfort you.”

The President thanked the men and women of the armed forces for their efforts while charging them to find the perpetrators.

“Particularly the police. For what they are doing and what they are about to do. You must unearth and find the killers,” Tinubu said.

“I’m glad IGP is here. I’m glad COAS is here too. Chief of Army Staff. I’m glad the Minister of Defence is here. Our dear leaders. I’ve been to Jos. I’ve enjoyed Jos. In those days of peace. We’ve had our political activities here.”

The President’s visit comes amid continued violence in the state.

Among those killed in the recent attacks is a National Youth Service Corps member, Haruna Ibrahim, whose death has sparked outrage across the country.

Ibrahim was attacked and set ablaze on Tuesday — the same day he was expected to participate in his Passing Out Parade marking the completion of his national service.

A resident, Peter Ganchok, who narrated the incident, described the killing as horrific and deeply tragic.

“Haruna Ibrahim, a Nigerian Corps member from Batch A1 2025, serving under the Sport CDS in Jos, has been brutally killed in a heartbreaking and tragic incident,” he said.

According to Ganchok, the corps member was targeted during retaliatory violence that followed the earlier attack by unidentified gunmen in the community.

“He was reportedly attacked and burned to death in Anguwan Rukuba by some angry youths in the area,” Ganchok added.

The incident has further deepened fears among residents and students of the University of Jos, many of whom have raised alarm over escalating insecurity and alleged delayed response by security agencies.

Distress messages circulating online showed residents calling for urgent intervention, warning that the situation could spiral further out of control without immediate action.

The University of Jos Alumni Association expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation, urging authorities to deploy more personnel and intensify surveillance to protect lives and property.

“The University of Jos Alumni Association expresses deep concern over the recent rise in tension and reported threats affecting students, staff and the broader university community,” the group said in a statement.

It called for “round-the-clock patrols, intelligence-led surveillance, and rapid response units” to prevent further attacks.

SaharaReporters had reported earlier incidents in the area, including an attack on a church in Anguwan Rukuba where windows were smashed and violence erupted, forcing residents to flee amid gunshots and chaos.

Despite the deployment of security operatives to affected communities, residents have continued to criticise what they describe as inadequate protection and slow response to distress calls.

Tinubu arrived in Jos on Thursday following the attacks and was received at the airport by the All Progressives Congress National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, and the state governor, Caleb Mutfwang, alongside other top government officials.

The President had on Monday condemned the Jos killings and a separate attack in Kahir village in Kagarko, Kaduna State, where wedding guests were reportedly killed and abducted.

Speaking through his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described the incidents as “barbaric and cowardly,” vowing that perpetrators would be brought to justice.

While condemning the attacks, the President also cautioned against narratives suggesting religious motives, warning that such claims could further inflame tensions.

Tinubu’s visit to Plateau followed his decision to postpone a scheduled trip to Iperu, Ogun State, where he was expected to inaugurate operations at the Gateway International Cargo Airport.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President opted to visit Jos to commiserate with victims and assess the situation firsthand.

He was expected to proceed to Lagos afterward for the Good Friday holiday.

President Tinubu’s visit to Jos and his promise to install 5,000 cameras represents a technological approach to addressing the security challenges that have plagued Plateau State for years.

However, the killing of NYSC member Haruna Ibrahim — burned to death on the very day he was supposed to celebrate the completion of his national service — underscores the depth of the crisis and the cycle of violence that continues to claim lives.

The retaliatory nature of Ibrahim’s killing raises concerns about the potential for the situation to spiral into sustained communal violence if urgent measures are not taken.

For residents of Plateau State, the President’s promise that “this experience will not repeat itself” will be measured against the reality on the ground in the coming weeks and months.

The installation of cameras, while potentially useful for identifying perpetrators after the fact, does not address the immediate need for preventive security that residents have repeatedly called for.

As the President acknowledged, no amount of compensation can replace the lives lost — but for grieving families like that of the mother he addressed, the true test of government commitment will be whether such tragedies are indeed prevented from recurring.
