NBA presidential aspirant and past Chairman of the NBA Lagos Branch, Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe SAN, has sent a goodwill message to the Young Lawyers’ Forum, Port Harcourt Branch, on the occasion of the 2026 Young Lawyers’ Summit themed “Beyond Borders: Empowering the Next Generation in an Age of Disruption and Innovation.”

In his message, Akangbe SAN described young lawyers as the heartbeat of the Nigerian Bar, urging them to see themselves as key drivers of the profession’s future and to embrace change, innovation, and global competitiveness.

Akangbe described the summit’s theme as both timely and compelling, noting that it reflects the realities of a rapidly evolving legal profession.

“It reflects the realities of a rapidly evolving legal profession where boundaries are no longer defined by geography, tradition, or convention. The future belongs to those who are willing to think beyond borders, embrace change, and lead with innovation,” Akangbe stated.

The Senior Advocate placed significant responsibility on the younger generation of lawyers, telling them that their energy, ideas, and resilience are critical to the growth and transformation of the legal profession.

“As you gather to learn, connect, and share, I encourage you to see yourselves as key drivers of the future we all seek. The responsibility to elevate the Bar rests significantly on your shoulders,” Akangbe stated.

He urged the young lawyers to always remember that “the strength and future of the Bar lie in your hands.”

Akangbe used the occasion to articulate his vision for the Nigerian Bar — a vision that aligns with his aspirations for the NBA presidency.

“My vision remains firmly rooted in building a Bar that is progressive, inclusive, and responsive to the demands of a changing world. A Bar where excellence is nurtured, innovation is embraced, and every lawyer is empowered to compete on a global stage,” Akangbe stated.

The emphasis on global competitiveness and innovation reflects a growing recognition within the Nigerian legal profession that lawyers must adapt to technological disruption, cross-border practice, and new models of legal service delivery to remain relevant.

Akangbe commended the leadership of the Young Lawyers’ Forum, Port Harcourt Branch, for organising the summit, expressing confidence that the discussions would inspire new thinking, strengthen professional relationships, and deepen the collective commitment to excellence.

The Young Lawyers’ Summit comes at a time when the Nigerian legal profession is grappling with multiple challenges, including the NBA’s ongoing electoral crisis, tensions between the Bench and the Bar over judicial overreach, questions about the future of legal education, and the broader impact of technology and globalisation on legal practice.

Akangbe SAN, as a declared aspirant for the NBA presidency, is one of three Southwest candidates — alongside Aare Muyiwa Akinboro SAN and Mrs. Okusanya-Badejo SAN — contesting for the Association’s top position in an election that has been mired in controversy over the composition of the Electoral Committee, court orders, and allegations of bias.

His message to the Port Harcourt Young Lawyers’ Forum represents both a genuine engagement with the younger generation of lawyers and a strategic outreach to a key constituency in the NBA’s electoral landscape.
