The Lawyers In Business Institute (LIBI) has unveiled a pooled Treasury Bills investment arrangement aimed at enabling lawyers and other interested Nigerians to participate in the money market without individually raising the more than ₦50 million required for direct bidding at the primary market.

Under the arrangement, LIBI said 20 participants would contribute ₦2.5 million each, creating a ₦50 million pool to be deployed in Nigerian Treasury Bills through its Cooperative and Money-Market Scheme.

The initiative forms part of LIBI’s broader campaign encouraging professionals to build alternative sources of income through a combination of government securities, property ownership and rental investments.

Direct primary-market Treasury Bills bids are generally subject to a minimum of ₦50.001 million, with bids submitted through authorised dealers. Treasury Bills are Federal Government short-term securities issued through the Central Bank of Nigeria and are typically offered in 91-day, 182-day and 364-day tenors.

LIBI said its cooperative structure was designed to allow participants who could not independently meet the primary-market threshold to combine their funds for investment. The institute said the scheme is open not only to lawyers but also to other members of the public interested in participating.

LIBI also referred to a previous Treasury Bills transaction in which it said participants earned returns from a one-year investment, using the experience to encourage members to combine fixed-income investments with real estate as part of longer-term financial planning.

Investors should, however, note that Treasury Bills rates are determined through the auction process and cannot be guaranteed in advance. Fees, taxes and the eventual auction rate can also affect the net return received.

Alongside the money-market initiative, LIBI is promoting its Mass-Housing and Land-Banking Scheme in Abuja, encouraging participants to acquire plots, develop residential properties and generate rental income as another source of long-term earnings.

The institute disclosed that Sir Mato Magaji Ibrahim, SAN, of the Nigerian Bar Association Kano Branch, is among its latest allottees under the housing and land-banking programme.

According to LIBI, four plots of various sizes remained available under its existing pricing arrangement at the time of the announcement.

“We are never designed to work forever. Please let the money you have worked for these years work for you,” the institute said.

LIBI also invited interested persons to inspect the housing development, with the meeting point at the VON/Trademore Estate Junction, Airport Road, Abuja.

The institute provided 08060266163 and 08050489622 for enquiries about the Cooperative and Money-Market Scheme.
