A fire outbreak on Monday morning affected a section of the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation building within the Federal Secretariat complex in Abuja, triggering panic among workers and heavy traffic congestion in the area.

The incident, which reportedly occurred around 8:00 a.m., was said to have started at Section C of the multi-storey building. Eyewitness footage circulating on social media showed thick plumes of dark smoke billowing from an upper floor of the structure, with the fire appearing concentrated in one wing of the building.

Staff members and visitors were seen hurriedly moving away from the area as emergency responders were alerted and moved in to contain the blaze.

The Media Department of the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation confirmed the incident, stating that the fire was limited to Section C of the building.

Officials of the Federal Fire Service also confirmed that firefighters were immediately deployed after receiving distress calls.

“Yes, we received the call of a fire outbreak at the Head of the Civil Service building in Abuja this morning and immediately deployed our personnel. They are currently working there,” a fire service representative said in a telephone interview.

The fire incident also caused major traffic disruptions around the Federal Secretariat area as security officials diverted vehicles away from the affected building to allow emergency personnel access to the scene.

According to an official of the Federal Road Safety Corps, the traffic congestion was a direct result of the emergency response to the fire.

Several motorists were prevented from using their usual routes, forcing many commuters to abandon vehicles and trek to their destinations due to the resulting gridlock.

As firefighters battled to bring the situation under control, authorities said the exact cause of the fire had not yet been determined. Investigations are expected to commence once the blaze is fully contained.
