The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has said it is ready to investigate credible reports following public concerns over alleged incidents of child sexual abuse and misconduct in daycare settings across Nigeria.

The agency made this known in a public notice issued on Tuesday amid growing online reactions to resurfaced old tweets by Nigerian singer, Simisola Bolatito Kosoko, popularly known as Simi.

In the notice, NAPTIP stated that, following recent public discussions and concerns regarding alleged incidents of child sexual abuse and misconduct in daycare centres, it is committed to thoroughly investigating credible reports.

The agency urged anyone with factual information, evidence, or direct knowledge of the matters referenced in the viral posts, as well as those personally affected, to reach out confidentially through its direct message channels or via email at info@naptip.gov.ng.

The statement reads, “Following recent public discussions and concerns raised regarding alleged incidents of child sexual abuse/misconduct in daycare settings in Nigeria, we are committed to thoroughly investigating credible reports. We kindly request anyone with factual information, evidence, direct knowledge, or who was personally affected by the matters referenced in the viral posts or related experiences to kindly reach out to us confidentially. Via DM or email us info@naptip.gov.ng.”

The development follows backlash that trailed one of the old posts from Simi’s X account dated March 14, 2012. In the now-deleted tweet, the singer referenced a four-year-old boy named David and described him as having a crush on her.

The viral post stated that the child kept coming close to her, acted as though he wanted to kiss her and placed his head on her lap, while she questioned whether she should give him a chance.

The tweet recently resurfaced online, triggering outrage from some social media users who accused the singer of sexualising a minor and called for an investigation.

Responding in a lengthy statement shared on her X page late Sunday, Simi said she became aware of the resurfaced tweets and felt compelled to address them.

She explained that she was 23 at the time and was living and assisting at her mother’s daycare while pursuing her music career.

According to her, she frequently tweeted about her daily experiences, including what she described as humorous moments involving children, maintaining that none of her posts stemmed from perversion.

The singer rejected attempts to frame the old tweet within what she described as false narratives, insisting that she had never engaged in depraved behaviour.

She added that she has consistently spoken against rape and sexual assault and continues to stand by that position.
