Former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, has been moved from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) as part of ongoing investigations into alleged financial irregularities amounting to N432 billion.

The ICPC confirmed late Wednesday that El-Rufai is in its custody, though the commission did not disclose the specifics of the allegations or the duration of his detention. The transfer follows his release by the EFCC after being held for questioning since Monday at its Abuja headquarters.

The former governor’s detention by the ICPC comes amid broader scrutiny of financial transactions and projects executed during his tenure as Kaduna State governor between 2015 and 2023. Sources at the EFCC told reporters that El-Rufai was released but was shortly afterwards taken into ICPC custody.

In addition to the financial probe, El-Rufai is facing separate criminal charges filed by the Federal Government at the Federal High Court, Abuja. He is accused of unlawfully intercepting phone communications of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, following his admission during a February 13, 2026, interview on Arise TV. The charges were filed under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024, and the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003.

Security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS), are reportedly on standby for his arraignment. Efforts to obtain comments from El-Rufai’s lawyer and media aides were unsuccessful as calls to their offices went unanswered.
