The Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA) has issued Notice No. 2 regarding the forthcoming NBA 2026 Elections for National Officers of the Association, formally calling for Letters of Expression of Interest from aspirants seeking to contest various national offices.

The notice, dated February 11, 2026, was signed by Aham Ejelam, SAN, Chairman (ECNBA 2026), and Ibrahim Aliyu Nassarawa, Esq., Secretary (ECNBA 2026).

The notice was issued pursuant to the NBA Constitution 2015 (as amended in 2025 and duly registered and certified by the Corporate Affairs Commission on January 26, 2026), following the earlier preliminary notice of election (ECNBA Notice No. 1) dated January 17, 2026.

According to the Committee, the zoning classification for the 2026 NBA National Elections in respect of National Officers is as follows:

  1. President – Western Zone
  2. First Vice President – Western Zone
  3. Second Vice President – Northern Zone
  4. Third Vice President – Eastern Zone
  5. General Secretary – Eastern Zone
  6. Assistant General Secretary – Not Zoned
  7. Treasurer – Not Zoned
  8. Welfare Secretary – Not Zoned
  9. Publicity Secretary – Not Zoned
  10. Assistant Publicity Secretary – Not Zoned

The notice outlines detailed eligibility requirements for each office:

President and First Vice President: A full member of the Association in private legal practice; of not less than 15 years post-call and not less than 2 years as a member of the National Executive Council (previously known as the National Executive Committee) (“NEC”) as at the date of nomination and has paid the requisite practicing fees and Branch dues as and when due, for three (3) consecutive years inclusive of the year of the election (2026).

Second Vice President: A full member of the Association of not less than 15 years post-call and not less than 2 years as a member of the National Executive Council (NEC) as at the date of nomination and has paid the requisite practicing fees and Branch dues as and when due for three (3) consecutive years inclusive of the year of the election (2026).

Third Vice President: A full member of the Association of not less than 15 years post-call and not less than 2 years as a member of the National Executive Council (NEC) as at the date of nomination and has paid the requisite practicing fees and Branch dues as and when due for three (3) consecutive years inclusive of the year of the election (2026).

General Secretary: A full member of the Association in private practice, of not less than 15 years post-call and not less than 2 years as a member of the National Executive Council (NEC) as at the date of nomination and has paid the requisite practicing fees and Branch dues as and when due for three (3) consecutive years inclusive of the year of the election (2026).

Assistant General Secretary: A full member of the Association, of not less than 5 years post-call and not less than 2 years as a member of the Executive Committee of a Branch or Section or Forum of the Association or have been a member of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Association for not less than two (2) years as at the time of nomination and has paid the requisite practicing fees and Branch dues as and when due for three (3) consecutive years inclusive of the year of the election (2026).

Treasurer: A full member of the Association, of not less than 10 years post-call and not less than 2 years as a member of NEC or the Executive Committee of a Branch or Section or Forum at the time of nomination and has paid the requisite practicing fees and Branch dues as and when due for three (3) consecutive years inclusive of the year of the election (2026).

Welfare Secretary: A full member of the Association, of not less than 10 years post-call and not less than 2 years as a member of the National Executive Council (NEC) or the Executive Committee of a Branch or Section or Forum of the Association at the time of nomination and has paid the requisite practicing fees and Branch dues as and when due for three (3) consecutive years inclusive of the year of the election (2026).

Publicity Secretary: A full member of the Association, of not less than 10 years post-call and not less than 2 years as a member of the National Executive Council (NEC) or the Executive Committee of a Branch or Section or Forum of the Association at the time of nomination and has paid the requisite practicing fees and Branch dues as and when due for three (3) consecutive years inclusive of the year of the election (2026).

Assistant Publicity Secretary: A full member of the Association, of not less than 5 years post-call and not less than 2 years as a member of the National Executive Council (NEC) or Executive Committee of a Branch, or Section or Forum of the Association as at the time of nomination and has paid the requisite practicing fees and Branch dues as and when due for three (3) consecutive years inclusive of the year of the election (2026).

All interested aspirants are required to submit a Letter of Expression of Interest on or before February 20, 2026. The letter must be written on the applicant’s letterheaded paper (with telephone numbers including WhatsApp and email addresses), must be personally signed by the applicant (not by a proxy or agent), and must contain:

(a) Full names as enrolled in the Supreme Court Rolls and current names (if different from the ones in the SC Rolls); (b) Supreme Court Enrollment Number; (c) Year of Call to the Bar; (d) Branch Name; (e) Confirmation of NEC membership and/or Branch Executive and/or Section and/or Forum as prescribed by the NBA Constitution; (f) Confirmation of payment of practicing fees and Branch dues as and when due as prescribed.

The letter must be accompanied with clear, clean, legible, current and valid photo ID of the applicant (ECOWAS/Nigerian Passport data page or NIN Slip/Card, or Voter’s Card (PVC) or Driver’s License) and the other supporting documents.

The Committee emphasised that applicants have till 5:00 p.m. on the 20th day of February, 2026 to comply with all the requirements as contained in Notice No. 2.
