The Body of Benchers has announced the demise of Hon. Justice Chinwe Eugenia Iyizoba, a retired Justice of the Court of Appeal, who passed away on January 31, 2026, at the age of 76.

The announcement was issued by the family of the late jurist and communicated to members through the Body of Benchers in a circular signed by Daniel M. Tela, Esq., Secretary of the Body of Benchers, and addressed to all Benchers. The notice was also issued on behalf of the family and signed by Onuora Iyizoba.

The statement read in part:

“With absolute submission to the will of God, we, the family of Late Richard, Ositadinma, Molokwu Iyizoba of Ajie, Nimo, Anambra State, announce the passing into glory of our cherished mother, grandmother, sister-in-law, sister and aunt, Hon. Justice Chinwe Eugenia Iyizoba, Justice of the Court of Appeal (Rtd), who departed this world on the 31st day of January, 2026.”

Hon. Justice Iyizoba was a retired Justice of the Court of Appeal and, until her demise, was serving a second term as a member of the Body of Benchers.

According to information from the family, condolence visits may be paid on Saturdays and Sundays at the following residences:

  • The Oranges, No. 75 Nza Street, Independence Layout, Enugu
    Time: 12:00 noon to 7:00 pm
  • No. 295A, Surulere Way, Dolphin Estate, Ikoyi, Lagos
    Time: 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm

The Body of Benchers prayed for the repose of her soul and asked God Almighty to comfort her family, friends, and colleagues. It added that details of the funeral programme would be communicated to members once received from the family.

The death of Hon. Justice Chinwe Eugenia Iyizoba marks a significant loss to the Nigerian judiciary and the legal profession. She devoted her life to the administration of justice and the advancement of the legal profession in Nigeria.

Hon. Justice Iyizoba retired from the Court of Appeal in February 2020 after 23 years of meritorious service on the bench. A valedictory court session was held in her honour on January 24, 2020, at the Enugu Division of the Court of Appeal to mark her retirement.
