Nigeria’s electricity grid suffered another collapse on Tuesday, plunging major parts of the country into darkness as all electricity distribution companies failed to receive supply.

A check on the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) website showed that as of 10:54 a.m., no distribution companies were allocated electricity. By 11:14 a.m., only Delta Gas Power Plant was generating 39 megawatts on the national grid.

This marks the second grid collapse in four days, with the previous disturbance occurring last Friday. Preliminary operational reports from NISO indicated that the outage was linked to the simultaneous tripping of multiple 330kV transmission lines and the disconnection of some grid-connected generating units.

“These events collectively contributed to the system collapse at the time indicated. Following the outage, system restoration activities commenced at about 13:15 hours, in accordance with established grid restoration and recovery procedures,” NISO said.

By the time of reporting, electricity supply had been restored to Abuja, Osogbo, Benin, Onitsha, Sakete, Jebba, Kainji, Shiroro, and parts of Lagos, while restoration efforts continued in other areas. NISO added that a detailed investigation into the root and contributory causes of the disturbance is ongoing.

Major districts of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, were without power during the morning outage. Persistent grid collapses and erratic electricity supply have continued to disrupt households and businesses across the country, forcing many Nigerians to rely on generators and solar power.

In notices to customers, electricity distribution companies confirmed the outage. The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) stated that the outage occurred after a system collapse at 10:48 a.m. and assured customers that it was working with Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) partners for speedy restoration.

Similarly, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) said it regretted the power loss across its franchise area and that it had no timeline for restoration, adding that updates would be provided as soon as more information becomes available.

The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) also issued an advisory, urging customers to exercise patience as teams worked to restore power across all its franchise areas.
