Counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, Mr Aloy Ejimakor, has insisted that no executive order can end the sit-at-home observance in the South-East, stressing that the protest will only cease when Kanu is released.

Ejimakor made the assertion in a post on X on Monday, describing the weekly Monday sit-at-home as a clear expression of widespread dissatisfaction among Igbo people over Kanu’s continued detention.

According to him, the persistence of the sit-at-home reflects deep-seated grievances within the region and cannot be halted through government directives.

“This truth is self-evident: The Monday sit-at-home in the South-East is the best evidence of how unhappy Ndigbo are over the travails of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, and it will persist until he is freed,” he said.

Ejimakor added that the protest had reached a stage where executive actions were ineffective, insisting that it would end immediately once Kanu regained his freedom.

His remarks came amid renewed enforcement efforts by the Anambra State Government to compel residents to resume normal business activities on Mondays.

On Monday, Governor Chukwuma Soludo ordered the closure of the Onitsha Main Market for one week following reports that traders failed to comply with the state’s directive to ignore the sit-at-home order.

The Onitsha Main Market, one of the largest commercial hubs in West Africa, plays a critical role in the regional economy.

The state government said the enforcement measures were aimed at restoring economic stability and preventing disruptions caused by recurring sit-at-home protests.

Meanwhile, IPOB commended residents of Anambra State for what it described as a peaceful observance of the sit-at-home in solidarity with its detained leader.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group said the action reflected the resolve of the people to demand Kanu’s release.

IPOB praised residents for their courage and sacrifice, describing the sit-at-home as a legitimate and peaceful form of civil protest.

However, the group criticised Governor Soludo over alleged threats to shut markets, warning that such actions would amount to intimidation of citizens exercising their rights.

The separatist group urged traders and residents in Onitsha, Nnewi, Awka and other parts of the state to resume normal business activities, arguing that citizens should not be punished for participating in a protest.

According to IPOB, sit-at-home actions are a form of civil disobedience intended to draw attention to perceived injustice and should not be met with coercive measures.

The group further urged elected officials to prioritise dialogue and advocacy over confrontations, particularly regarding Kanu’s detention.

IPOB concluded by calling on its supporters and the wider Igbo community to remain peaceful and disciplined, while reiterating that its primary demand remains the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
