Members of the House of Representatives Ad Hoc Committee investigating alleged alterations to Nigeria’s tax laws have said the panel is still finalising its work, explaining why its report has not yet been submitted to the House.

The committee was set up by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas following claims by Sokoto State lawmaker Abdussamad Dasuki that the harmonised tax Acts passed by both chambers of the National Assembly differed materially from the version later gazetted and circulated across government agencies.
Dasuki, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, warned that unauthorised changes could create serious legal conflicts, as some clauses in the gazetted laws were allegedly not approved by the legislature.
The allegations sparked controversy within political and legal circles, with concerns that tampering with tax legislation could undermine parliamentary authority, weaken public confidence in the law-making process, and expose government agencies to litigation.
Lawmakers and civil society groups have called for a transparent investigation to determine whether due process was breached and who may be responsible.
The seven-member Ad Hoc Committee, chaired by Muktar Betara (Biu/Bayo/Kwaya Kusar Federal Constituency, Borno State), has been tasked with investigating Dasuki’s claims.
Separately, the House minority caucus established an independent committee to guide its official stance on the matter.
Iduma Igariwey, a committee member representing Afikpo North/Afikpo South Federal Constituency in Ebonyi State, told The PUNCH on Thursday that the panel is still concluding its assignment. “The Committee is not done with its assignment yet. We’re likely going to be done before resumption from the Christmas break,” he said.
Another member and former Deputy Speaker Idris Wase added that the committee’s findings would be formally laid before the House once completed. “A Committee properly constituted by the House makes its findings to the parliament,” Wase said.
The National Assembly is expected to resume plenary from its Christmas and New Year recess on Tuesday, January 27, 2026. Efforts to reach committee chairman Betara for comment were unsuccessful at the time of filing.
