The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has disclosed that one of its unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) temporarily lost communication while carrying out a routine mission in support of ongoing counter-insurgency operations.

In a statement issued on Friday, January 2, 2026, the NAF said the incident occurred within Sector 3 of Operation FASAN YAMMA. The UAV reportedly experienced a loss of data link during the mission, and all efforts to restore communication were unsuccessful.

The statement, signed by the NAF spokesman, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said that following established operational procedures, emergency return-to-base measures were immediately initiated. It added that the Air Force also activated a coordinated response and recovery operation in collaboration with other security agencies and relevant authorities.

The NAF confirmed that the UAV has been successfully contained, while technical teams have secured the platform and begun preliminary assessments in line with safety and operational standards.

The Air Force stressed that there were no casualties resulting from the incident and that military operations across all operational theatres remain fully on course.

Reaffirming its commitment to national security, the NAF assured Nigerians that counter-insurgency operations continue without disruption and that the service remains focused on maintaining professionalism and operational effectiveness.
